Antiquary 15 Year Old Review

2nd June 2025
Looking for Father's Day whisky gift ideas for your whisky loving Dad, how about a malt rich Antiquary 15 Year Old Claret Casks matured Scotch blended whisky which could match many more expensive single malts for quality and flavour pleasure.

Antiquary 15 Year OldAlmost a year ago Highland distiller Tomatin unveiled three new expressions from their Antiquary blended Scotch whisky brand as part of a brand re-launch featuring a bold new look and vision. The brand re-launched with three new mature age statement Scotch blended whiskies, a Antiquary 15, 21 and 30 Year Old.

The reason I mention it is I know many visitors to the site at this time of year are looking for suggestions for a whisky to get for their Dad for a Father's Day gift.

Honouring the legacy of its pioneering founders, J&W Hardie—renowned for their innovation in their time—The Antiquary continues to blend tradition with modern appeal. The brand focuses on flavour profiles that resonate with today’s whisky drinkers, all while staying true to its heritage and reputation for blends with an exceptionally high malt content.

Each age-statement expression in the Antiquary line-up comes in striking, premium packaging, ideal for dads who appreciate both sophistication and substance this Father’s Day. The bottles, inspired by Victorian and Edwardian antiques, embody The Antiquary’s timeless aesthetic with a contemporary twist—making them a standout addition to any drinks cabinet.

The whisky I am reviewing here is the Antiquary 15 Year Old, which has been crafted from a selection of fine whiskies married and matured in red wine claret casks from France’s Bordeaux region, you can read my thoughts on it below.

Matured in tawny port casks from Portugal’s renowned Symington Family Estates, The Antiquary 21 Year Old should make an exceptional gift for Father’s Day.

I haven't yet had the pleasure of this distinguished blend but it is said to open with aromatic notes of camphor, hessian, cut hay, burning heather, dark mocha, saffron, and vanilla. On the palate, rich layers of spiced plum, wild strawberries, dark chocolate, charred game, and orange unfold, leading to a memorable finish laced with sea salt and red fruits.

The Antiquary 30 Year Old has been carefully married for over three years in sherry casks from Jerez, which they tell me has resulted in a deeply complex and refined whisky. They say on the nose, it reveals layers of passionfruit, mango, grilled pineapple, maple syrup, subtle smoked bacon, and aged timber. The palate delivers a rich fusion of tropical fruits, syrupy sweetness, and well-integrated oak spice, finishing with notes of beeswax, heather honey, and a distinctive waxy tropical fruit character.

Bottled at 40% ABV.

William Morrison's Tasting Notes:

Nose: An enticing mix of sweet vanilla, barley sugars and fruit in the form of orange and raisin, and a lovely gentle edge of mature oak reminding you of its maturity.

Taste: A deliciously rich smooth delivery of lovely fruit - raisins and sultanas, orange, a light sweet vanilla sweetness peaks through from behind the lovely fruit and a wee touch of cloves hiding there also, a late touch of dry ginger and a very light dusting of pepper.

Finish: A longish finish were the sweet fruit has become a little tart, now with a touch of plum, this bitters out leaving a little cloves, ginger, peppery spice and mildly drying oak to have the last word.

Comment: A smooth easy to drink, malt rich, fruity blend where the gentle oak tannins reminds you that it is no youngster, some quality claret casks at play here that have produced a high quality mature Scotch blended whisky which could match many more expensive single malts for quality and flavour pleasure.

SMW Blended Whisky Score 89/100
