Ardbeg Perpetuum Review & 200th Anniversary Event In London

22nd May 2015

Review of the outstanding new Ardbeg Perpetuum, Ardbeg as it should be and a 200th Anniversary dinner event in London to launch the new whisky.

It has been 200 years since Ardbeg single malt whisky was first distilled on the Scottish island of Islay and 15 years since the legacy of this cult whisky was safeguarded by the foundation of the Ardbeg Committee.

The future of the distillery was guaranteed in 2000 when it formed one of the most passionate and devoted whisky fan clubs in the world with the creation of the Ardbeg Committee - to ensure "the doors of Ardbeg never close again". Today the Committee has 100,000 members in over 130 countries and Ardbeg Day has become a global annual event.

To mark these memorable events, at this year’s Ardbeg Day on 30th May 2015 with a ‘Past, Present and Future’ theme, committee members will have the opportunity to buy tickets (£200 per person) to attend the celebratory London event held at The Vinyl Factory, commemorating the distillery’s bicentenary and be amongst the first to taste Perpetuum, the new limited edition.

The experience at The Vinyl Factory, London, choose between a immersive lunch or dinner which will include an experiential whisky meal - hosted by Brendan McCarron, head of Maturing Whisky Stocks. The three course experience will be paired with Ardbeg whiskies from the range and to continue the celebration each guest will also receive a Limited Edition bottle of Perpetuum signed by Dr Bill Lumsden, Director of Distilling, Whisky Creation & Whisky Stocks and Brendan McCarron upon departure. This truly is a unique event for Ardbeg enthusiasts. Tickets for the Ardbeg 200th Anniversary event in London are available from HERE.

Ardbeg Perpetuum is inspired by the many styles, ideas and quirks of fate which have influenced Ardbeg over time; it combines different styles, flavours, dreams and trials. Connoisseurs will taste a never-ending, rich and enticing combination of classic Ardbeggian notes and incredibly creamy flavours.

Dr Bill Lumsden, Ardbeg’s Director of Distilling and Whisky Creation, said: "Ardbeg’s character has endured for 200 years and we hope it will continue for centuries to come. The 2015 Ardbeg Day anniversary bottling, Ardbeg Perpetuum, celebrates this milestone year with a recipe that includes some very old and young Ardbeg, silky Ardbeg from bourbon barrels and some spicy Ardbeg from sherry casks. The resulting expression combines classic notes of dark chocolate and treacle with sea-spray, peat smoke, vanilla and a hint of sherry casks, to create an unforgettable single malt with an aftertaste that is never-ending."

Ardbeg Perpetuum, launched for this bicentenary, will be available to purchase from 30th May 2015 at Ardbeg Embassies including The Whisky Exchange for a two week exclusive period. From June 13th, Perpetuum will be available at Ardbeg Embassies, Whisky specialists and department stores with a RSP of £84.99.

Ardbeg Perpetuum is non-chill filtered and is bottled at 47.4% ABV.

Ardbeg Perpetuum Committee Distillery Edition Review

Note that this review is for the Ardbeg Perpetuum Committee Distillery Edition advance preview bottling which was bottled at 49.2% ABV but I don't think it will differ much from the Ardbeg Perpetuum 47.4% ABV which will be available to purchase from 30th May.

William Morrison's Tasting Notes:

Nose:  Salty seaweed and lemon, iodine, earthy, mossy, tarry bonfire smoke.

Taste: Layers of smoke, creamy vanilla and spice. Some dark chocolate and a touch of lemon.

Finish: Deliciously long lingering tarry smoke, creamy vanilla and spice.

Comment: Absolutely outstanding, just what Ardbeg should be and it is very fitting that this marks the distillery's 200th anniversary, it very much a candidate for my whisky of the year and it is only May!

Last year’s Ardbeg Auriverdes release was a bit lacking in the intensity that most Ardbeg fans lust after but the Ardbeg Perpetuum is in no way lacking and will satisfy all those peat heads looking for a salty, earthy, mossy, rich intensely peaty with perhaps just the slightest touch of sherry influence by way of the spice and dark chocolate. If you are a classic Ardbeg fan then don't miss the next release of the Ardbeg Perpetuum 47.4% ABV on the 30th May.

SMW Whisky Score 95/100
