The Balvenie 25 Year Old Single Barrel Traditional Oak

29th October 2014
The Balvenie 25 Single Barrel Traditional Oak tops off Balvenie Single Cask range.

The Balvenie have released the third and final addition to The Balvenie Single Barrel range with the release of The Balvenie 25 Year Old Single Barrel Traditional Oak. The 25 year old malt as the whisky's title suggests was matured exclusively in traditional American oak casks that have already been used to mature Scotch whisky.

Like the other expressions in the Single Barrel range the new Balvenie 25 Year Old Single Barrel Traditional Oak is the work of The Balvenie's 50 year plus veteran Malt Master David Stewart. David samples many casks using his nosing skills which he has refined throughout his 50 year career and has only selected individual casks for bottling which display the characteristics which he would expect to find in a Balvenie malt whisky of this maturity. After spending 25 years exclusively in a traditional American oak the whisky displays subtle spices and a rich honeyed sweetness.

As you know by their very nature no two single casks will ever produce an identical single malt. As such, the single malt from each cask of Single Barrel Traditional Oak Aged 25 Year Old is unique and like the other expressions in the Single Barrel range no more than 300 bottles will be filled from any one cask. This is reflected on the bottle label – hand numbered and carrying the distillation date, bottling date and cask number in which the whisky was matured.

David commented, "Over the course of my time at the distillery, I’ve sampled thousands of casks and this means I know what to expect when our spirit is matured for many years solely in traditional American oak casks. This allows me to pick out the casks of whisky that display the expected rich, sweet and slightly spicy character I’m looking for. But of course there will always be subtle difference between the whiskies from different casks and I know that more and more drinkers appreciate this and will enjoy the experience of drinking this single cask whisky."

The new Single Barrel Traditional Oak Aged 25 Year Old joins the two existing Single Barrel whiskies, The Balvenie First Fill 12 Year Old (which has now replaced the The Balvenie First Fill 15 Year Old) which is matured in barrels previously containing bourbon and The Balvenie Sherry Cask 15 Year Old which is matured in European oak casks. These three single malts showcase Balvenie matured in the three main types of casks used at The Balvenie Distillery and provide whisky enthusiasts with a ‘straight from- the-cask’ Balvenie whisky experience.

The Balvenie 25 Year Old Single Barrel Traditional Oak like other expressions in the Single Barrel range is non chill-filtered and has been bottled at 47.8%. It is now currently available from The Whisky Exchange priced at £399.
