Review of of
the festive cask strength winter warmer
from Douglas Laing, the Big Peat
Christmas 2019 edition
 I
have always been a big fan of Big Peat
since its innovative creator, Fred
Laing, poured me a dram of it 10 years
ago now, 10 years on it is now a
favourite with peaty whisky fans and you
have just got to love these limited
release annual Christmas editions.
This Big Peat Christmas 2019 is now the
9th limited release Christmas edition in
the big peaty cask strength winter
warmer series and I don't think you will
ever find a more Christmassy looking
bottle of whisky to give as a gift
anywhere.
As always the peaty blended malt
contains whiskies from your favourite
Islay operating distilleries as well as
a top secret amount from the long time
closed Port Ellen.
Almost as much anticipated as the whisky
itself is the festive packaging the
whisky is presented in, this year it
shows Big Peat carefully selecting the
casks for 'his' 2019 Christmas
expression, rolling a cask out of the
cold, dark Islay warehouse on a snowy
night. The premium gift tube glitters
with the winter snowfall against the
dark night’s sky.
Big Peat Christmas 2019 has
been bottled at a blended cask strength
of 53.7% ABV, it is naturally
coloured, non-chill-filtered as always and has
very palatable price tag of £51.95

Morrison's Tasting Notes:
Nose:
A deliciously enticing gristy Islay mix
of salt, lemon citrus and peat smoke.
Some sweet vanilla which is kept in
check by a salty edge. The peat is
gentle but at the same time screams
Islay.
Taste:
Demerara sugar sweetened creamy vanilla
leads and is quickly followed by a mixed
blend of Big Peats oily Islay peatiness
which has a lovely liquorice edge.
Finish:
Long, peaty oils tinged with liquorice
and a little vanilla slowly fades out.
Comment:
Big Peat is not the peat monster some
would expect given its name, it
certainly offers up a big helping of
peat but what it is big on is quality,
and this is another quality well
constructed, cask strength peaty dram
which given its festive packaging and
what's in the bottle I would be more
than happy to find it in my Christmas
stocking. I would say that a mix of
Ardbeg and Coal Ila styles have the
biggest say here, another very enjoyable
peaty dram.
