Black Tartan
Batch 21, a limited edition blend of
five Scotch single malts from Inchgower,
Teaninich, Benrinnes, Blair Athol and
Tormore distilleries.
 Edinburgh
based Skene Whisky has just released the
next limited edition instalment of their
Black Tartan Scotch Blended Malt Whisky,
Black Tartan Batch 21, which is the
independent bottler's first blended malt bottling for
2021.
Black Tartan Batch 21 is a blend of five
component Scotch single malt whiskies
from Highland & Speyside distilleries.
The five whiskies are: Inchgower 2008;
Teaninich 2008; Benrinnes 2010; Blair
Athol 2012; and Tormore 2016. The
vatting of the five single malts
produced a total of 2,990 70cl bottles
which have been bottled non
chill-filtered at 40%, although I am
told it does contain a small amount of
colouring, still an intriguing blend of
Highland and Speyside malts and great to
see a bottler willing to bottle non
chill-filtered at this strength, I wish
more bottlers would do it.
Black Tartan describe it as the latest
example of their dedication to quality
over quantity in the blended malt whisky
category. Created in Elgin over the
Winter of 2020/21 the whisky, presented
in a dark glass bottle which does make
you wonder 'why the colouring?'.
Black Tartan Batch 21 is said to offer
balanced sweetness, they describe it as
fresh and spicy on the nose and say it
offers vanilla and butterscotch on the
palate and a smooth, sweet and warming
finish.
