Bowmore The Devil's Casks II 10 Year Old

18th August 2014 (updated 11th September)
Its on the way! Bowmore The Devil's Casks II a devilish follow up to last years small batch release.

Bowmore has announced the launch of The Devil’s Casks II– a devilish follow up to last years popular small batch limited release. Like the first batch  this second release in what is now The Devil's Casks Series has also been matured exclusively - and unusually - for 10 years in first fill sherry casks. Non chill-filtered and this time bottled at 56.3% ABV.

Bowmore tell me The Devil's Casks II is as mischievous as the first release and reveals even more of Bowmore’s devilish dark side, once again bursting with Bowmore’s hot and fiery characteristics, deep mahogany colour and rich fruitcake flavour.

Created to celebrate one of Islay’s most famous tales - a story shrouded in myth and legend - 6,000 bottles of The Devil’s Casks II is due to hit the shelves of whisky shops around the world from September.

It is said that the round shape of the church of Bowmore which I am sure any of you who have visited Bowmore on Islay will have come across was created to prevent the devil from hiding in a any corners. The story goes that the Devil was spotted in the round church of Bowmore and chased by the local congregation down into the No. 1 vaults at the Bowmore distillery. Here, as the warehousemen were filling casks and loading them aboard the paddle steamer (The Maid of Islay) the devil was lost. It is believed he escaped in a cask of Bowmore bound for the mainland.

Once again it is presented in some devilishly smart packaging, a deep red box tells the story of the legend alongside smoke illustrations and a Devil’s pitchfork suggesting the Devil himself isn’t far away!

Rachel Barrie, Master Blender, Morrison Bowmore Distillers, commented, "The first edition of this expression was one of the most sought after whiskies of 2013. This second small batch release will no doubt emulate that success thanks to its devilishly tasty dark side, in debt to the first-fill sherry casks it has been carefully mellowed in."

Just as the first release there will be 6,000 bottles of the Devil’s Casks II available worldwide of which there will be 540 bottles in the UK this time at the slightly higher RRP of £60 which is still a great price for a unique small batch original distillery release which was non chill-filtered and bottled at 56.3% ABV. If the first release is anything to go by then I would say get it while you can as most of last years release sold out with pre-orders and I don't think this one will be on the shelves for long either.

Bowmore The Devil’s Casks II will be available from specialist whisky shops from September.

Last years release was outstanding considering its price, bottling strength and limited numbers and most importantly the whisky was very good, unfortunately I haven't yet had the chance to taste this years release, hopefully it is another big sherried devil worth adding to your whisky cabinet, but as experienced whisky drinkers know small batch release first fill sherry casks are not the most predictable whisky's so my fingers are crossed that this is another devilishly good dram. If I get the chance to taste it before it hits the shelves of the whisky shops I shall update this page and let you know what I think of it but meanwhile my tasting note for the first release is below, hopefully the 2nd release matches up to it.

Bowmore The Devil's Casks II Review

William Morrison's Tasting Notes (added 11th September 2014):

Colour: Burnt amber.

Nose: Lovely rich dark sherried fruit. Dark chocolate. Some subtle sweet Bowmore peat smoke.

Taste: The rich brandy dipped burnt raisins and sultanas which I found in the first release. Touch of sweet spicy vanilla and some lovely delicate Bowmore peat smoke coats the mouth.

Finish: Long, mildly drying. Wonderful dark rich fruits coated in mild Bowmore peat smoke and sweet spice.

Comment: The first fill sherry casks used for Devil's Casks II have imparted a slightly lighter colour and perhaps a little less sherry influence on the whisky than the first release but like the first release it is still top notch, a delicious big sherried cask strength dram with a subtle and delicious touch of Bowmore's unique peat smoke. I just wish Bowmore would make the releases bigger as these Devil's Casks releases are difficult to get hold of and if you want a second bottle you will have a snowballs chance in hell of getting one. 6,000 bottles is simply not enough to go around.

SMW Score 90/100
