Support The Transparency In Scotch Whisky Campaign
22nd February 2016
Calling all whisky drinkers to get behind the Compass Box lead campaign for "Transparency In Scotch Whisky"
Since launching back in 2000 Compass Box has built itself a very good reputation amongst us whisky drinkers for seeking evolutions for traditional techniques, particularly in oak maturation, to create some very compelling whiskies for us to enjoy. Along the way they have had their wrists slapped for there innovative maturation methods which they have employed to entertain us but they have always been open and transparent with us about the whisky they create.
Then the craziest thing happened late last year, Compass Box was informed that the way they have been communicating the age of the components in their whiskies is illegal, yes you read it right, illegal. So in what way were those bad boys at Compass Box breaking the law, they were simply offering complete transparency around the age of every whisky they use, but by doing so they have been breaking UK and EU Regulations governing the marketing and promotion of spirits.
It does seem quite unbelievable, but as the law stands at the moment Scotch whisky is one of the few products where it is prohibited by law to be fully open and honest with consumers.
The folks at Compass Box believe that Scotch whisky producers should have the freedom to offer their customers complete, unbiased and clear information on the age of every component used in their whiskies. That those customers have the right to know exactly what it is they’re drinking.
For these reasons Compass Box have launched a campaign to change the current regulations and they are asking for your support.
Compass Box are proposing an amendment to the current regulations that would:
"allow producers the freedom but not the obligation to provide complete, unbiased and clear information on every component whisky in their product – with or without a headline age statement outlining the age of the youngest spirit."
By ‘Complete’ Compass Box mean a full listing of the ages of every component whisky that has gone into a given product, alongside a percentage figure given to one decimal place denoting the contribution of each component whisky to the finished products.
