Review of the
Cotswolds Single Malt Whisky Inaugural
Release.
 The
Cotswolds distillery have launched their
first ever single malt whisky, the
limited edition Cotswolds Single Malt
Whisky Inaugural Release.
A limited release of 4,000 bottles which
has matured in a combination of
first-fill ex-Bourbon barrels and
specially shaved, toasted and re-charred
red wine casks, which I have to say has certainly
resulted in a striking maturity that is
not normally found in such a young
expression.
Production of the single malt began in
September 2014 at the site in the North
Cotswolds under the guidance of renowned
industry expert, the late Dr Jim Swan,
whose work with ‘new world whisky’
distilleries has brought whiskies such
as Kavalan, Amrut and Milk & Honey to
global attention.
The new whisky truly is a Cotswolds
whisky, with provenance of the raw
ingredients used to produce the whisky
being highly important to the
distillery, who have unusually committed
to using only Cotswolds-grown,
floor-malted barley in all their single
malt whiskies. And in a move that chimes
in with the growing (but controversial)
transparency movement in the whisky
industry, the barley variety and local
farm it was grown on will be listed on
each bottle, with detailed production
data for each release given on the
distillery’s website.

Single Malt is the culmination of years
of hard work, combining over five
decades of ‘grain to glass’ production
knowledge from internationally-renowned
experts with the region’s best-in-class
ingredients. We’ve managed to produce
something truly remarkable, and we
couldn’t be prouder of what we’ve
achieved."
The
Cotswolds Single Malt Whisky Inaugural
Release has
already sold out but they will be
releasing a limited number of bottles of
their Cotswolds Single Malt Whisky in
December which is
non-chill filtered and has been bottled at
46% ABV, it has a RRP of £44.95 and will be available from specialist whisky shops such as

Morrison's Tasting Notes:
Nose:
Some toasty oak, creamy sweet vanilla
toffee and a
lovely touch of rich fruit, peaches and
cooked apples. A slight feintiness.
Taste:
Deliciously malty, a barley sugar
sweetness, some dark treacle toffee with
a gentle rich orange citrusy edge, a
lovely light touch of oak spice hanging
around the background.
Finish:
Medium to long, vanilla with a citrusy edge,
becomes spicier, a little drying as it
fades.
Comment:
It is hard to believe that this is only
3 years old, if tasted blind I would
doubt anyone would guess its correct
age. An outstanding young whisky with a
lovely first fill bourbon influence
combining well with some delicious fruit
from the ex-red wine cask. Of course
there is still a sign of youth, just the
slightest feintiness with the first
couple of mouthfuls which quickly fades
and lets the quality and character of
the young whisky and the casks it
matured in shine.Time will tell just
how good the Cotswolds whisky will get
but at 3 years old things are looking
very promising for this new English
single malt whisky. Meanwhile grab
yourself a bottle of this new and most
importantly enjoyable English whisky.
