Whisky and Orange anyone? Deanston has
released a limited edition 17 Year Old
single malt whisky, finished in orange
wine casks from Andalucía.
Deanston 17 Year Old Orange Wine Cask
Finish is a new limited edition single
malt whisky from the Highland distiller,
it has been finished in Andalucían Vino
de Naranja casks — and it's one of the
more interesting releases to come out of
the Highland distillery in some time.
The whisky was crafted by master blender
Julieann Fernandez, at 34 one of the
youngest in the industry, and the
personal dimension here is genuine. Her
family roots lie in the Jaén region of
rural Andalucía, and those formative
years in Southern Spain shaped both her
palate and her instincts as a blender.
When orange wine casks became available,
the connection was obvious.
Her approach centred on "harmonising the
distinctive bitterness of Andalucía
oranges with the natural sweetness of
Deanston spirit" — and the build of this
whisky reflects that thinking at every
stage.
The foundation is 15 years in bourbon
casks, delivering Deanston's familiar
core of vanilla, orchard fruit, and soft
spice. That signature spirit is thick,
waxy, and slightly oily with a honeyed,
malty centre — robust enough to absorb
serious cask influence without losing
itself. Two years in Vino de Naranja
casks from Andalucía followed. This
isn't trendy skin-contact orange wine,
but fortified wine made with bitter
orange peel — a proper, punchy finishing
cask with character to match Deanston's.
The result they say on the nose: is
freshly peeled orange zest, marmalade,
dried apricots, honey, toasted almonds,
and soft malt sweetness, with white
flowers, light oak spice, and a subtle
chamomile note underneath. On the
palate: tangy citrus oils, blood orange,
stone fruits, sultanas, biscuits, orange
blossom honey, ginger, nutmeg, and a
whisper of wood spice.

Finish has been bottled at 53.6% ABV, it
is limited to 7,000 bottles globally and
it has a RRP of £95, you will find it available from specialist online whisky
