Whisky Focus - #JOINTHEPACT Anti Drink Driving Campaign Returns To Edinburgh

Edinburgh Airport and Edinburgh Trams joined F1’s Mika Häkkinen on Friday 7th December to urge Scots to #JOINTHEPACT and pledge to never drink and drive.

On Friday, Formula One legend, Mika Häkkinen travelled by Edinburgh Trams to Edinburgh Airport to promote Diageo's anti drink driving campaign and to encourage passengers to never drink and drive.

The two-times F1 World Drivers’ Champion also brought the Johnnie Walker Caparo T1 supercar to the Airport as part of a series of events in Edinburgh to promote the #JOINTHEPACT Never Drink and Drive campaign over the festive season. The video above shows some on board cam footage of Jenson Button and Kevin Magnussen driving racing cars through Edinburgh to promote Johnnie Walker backed Join The Pact Never Drink And Drive programme back in 2014 and watch out for Mika Häkkinen driving the Johnnie Walker Caparo T1 supercar near the end of the video clip.

#JOINTHEPACT is a global campaign which encourages people to make a commitment to Never Drink and Drive. So far in 2018, more than seven million people around the world have signed up to #JOINTHEPACT and more than 14 million people in total have made their commitment since 2008.

Mika Häkkinen leads the campaign globally for Diageo and Johnnie Walker Scotch Whisky in his role as the brand’s Global Responsible Drinking Ambassador, using the enormous popularity of Formula One to reach millions of people with the important Never Drink and Drive message.

Mika said: “Edinburgh is such a popular destination for people from all round the world, particularly in the build-up to New Year, so it’s great to be at Edinburgh Airport to encourage the thousands of people passing through to never drink and drive.

“I’m also delighted to have the support of Edinburgh Trams and I’d encourage everyone this festive season to use the tram service and leave the car at home if you are plan to enjoy a drink.”

“The festive season is a time for celebration but it’s important to remember not to drink and drive and plan ahead by looking at other transport options to ensure a safe and enjoyable Christmas and New Year, and we’re happy to back the #JoinThePact campaign.”

Lea Harrison, Managing Director of Edinburgh Trams said: “We’re delighted to be working with Diageo and Johnnie Walker to promote their campaign to never drink and drive. We’re running more services than ever before this festive period including our free all night trams on Hogmanay. So, this year, #JOINTHEPACT and get home safely with Edinburgh Trams.”

The world’s leading distilling company Diageo, and the world’s number one scotch whisky Johnnie Walker, have brought #JOINTHEPACT to the Scottish capital in support of the Scottish Government’s annual festive anti-drink drive campaign.

Chairman of Diageo in Scotland David Cutter said: “Edinburgh Airport and Edinburgh Trams are great partners of our business and they do so much to make Edinburgh a major global destination. So, it’s great to partner with them to promote our Join The Pact campaign.

“Since 2008 over 14 million people have made the pledge to Never Drink and Drive as part of our campaign and we want to go further and with support of our partners we hope to add many thousands more in Scotland as part of this campaign.”

As part of the Scottish campaign, Mika and the Johnnie Walker supercar Caparo T1 also visited the Scottish Parliament, where MSPs of all parties took part in an event to promote the campaign.
