Whisky Focus - Fettercairn 18 Year Old 2023 Release Review

Fettercairn 18 Year Old 2023 Release

31st May 2023
Fettercairn unveil the 2023 Edition of their Scottish Oak Finished 18 Year Old.

Following on from its
inaugural release last year Fettercairn distillery today announced the 2023 release of their pioneering, limited-edition, Scottish Oak Finished Single Malt Scotch Whisky, Fettercairn 18 Year Old.

This is
the Speyside distillery's first ever whisky expression finished in locally sourced Scottish Oak. The Fettercairn 18 Year Old is the culmination of years of planning and innovation, a marriage of American White Oak casks which have been finish in 100% Scottish Oak, sourced from the Scottish Highlands. They say it is progressive and innovative in style and substance and that this whisky celebrates what makes Fettercairn different – from the surprisingly tropical -house style achieved by the distinctive and pretty unique copper cooling ring distillation; to their future focused, innovative approach to local sourcing and working with the land in Aberdeenshire – ‘The Garden of Scotland’.

Non-chill filtered and natural in colour, the Fettercairn 18 has been bottled at an ABV of 46.8% ABV, it is described by Fettercairn as "golden amber in colour, with aromas of sugared almonds, baking spices and a tropical sweetness of passionfruit and guava. To taste, enjoy exotic syruped fruits, patisserie sugars, brioche and spices with soft hints of berry fruit. To finish, savour soft spice, cacao and natural vanilla".

Beyond the 18 years dedicated to making this whisky, this Single Malt is part of something truly significant. Master Whisky Maker Gregg Glass founded the ground-breaking Scottish Oak Programme which, whilst born at Fettercairn distillery, was created to ultimately support the drinks industry for generations to come.

Scottish Oak imparts incredible flavour and the programme – which has seen ancient forests replanted as well as skills honed in sawmills and cooperages – has created a circular economy for future whisky makers.

Gregg Glass was named as Global Master Distiller of the Year at the Icons of Whisky Awards, in part for his innovative and pioneering work on the Scottish Oak Programme, which has also since been awarded the industry’s Innovation of the Year*, reflecting this pioneering approach to flavour-led whisky making.

The first release of Fettercairn 18 Year Old received an overwhelmingly positive response from whisky lovers and curious explorers alike. With liquid scarce, it is anticipated that the 2023 annual release will be highly sought after.

Fettercairn 18 Year Old 2023 limited-edition annual release has a RRP of £200 ($275) and it will be available from June onwards f
rom specialist online whisky shops such as The Whisky Exchange, The Whisky Shop, Master of Malt and Hard To Find Whisky

If that is a little rich for you then why not check out the rest of the of Fettercairn range such as the Fettercairn 12, 16 Year  Olds and Warehouse 14 releases which are all decent drams for your money.

Fettercairn 18 Year Old 2022 Release Review

Note: This review is for the Fettercairn 18 Year Old 2022 release. Bottled at 46.8% ABV, naturally coloured and non-chill filtered.

William Morrison's Tasting Notes:

Nose: Sugared almond, a little honey and nutmeg, a little vanilla sweetness also, some citrusy lemon and mango add a fruity dimension all with a trimmed oak tannin and gentle spicy edge.

Taste: A lovely gentle mix of mango, lemon and grapefruit piggybacks in on the sweet oak sugars and spices, subtle honeycomb and vanilla mingles amongst the now more toasted oak spices, a touch of coffee and some late dark berries add another side to the fruit.

Finish: The sugars go first leaving the oak spices, fruit and vanilla to tussle it out for the final say, a tussle which the slightly drying oak wins, some late coffee notes.

Comment: Another great dram from Fettercairn, the Scottish oak has certainly had its say in this whisky but it doesn't fully overwhelm Fettercairn's fruity DNA, a pleasurable balance of fruit and oak.

SMW Whisky Score 88/100
