Fettercairn 16 Year Old 2nd Release 2021 Edition Review

14th December 2021
Fettercairn release the 2021 Edition of their 16 Year Old, a less sherried and more subtle dram than last year but still a very good single malt for your money.

Fettercairn 16 Year Old 2nd Release 2021 EditionFollowing the release of the outstanding inaugural Fettercairn 16 Year Old last year, the distillery has now released its successor, the Fettercairn 16 Year Old 2nd Release 2021 Edition.

Each release of the Fettercairn 16 Year Old is unique in its maturation journey and this new Fettercairn 16 Year Old 2nd Release 2021 Edition has been created with a combination of both Sherry-matured and Sherry-finished casks which the distillery tells me was to "create a truly refined, balanced yet classic combination of rare Fettercairn and Sherry styles".

The hand-selected casks for this latest release come from a small, family run Bodega in Jerez include first fill Oloroso, refill Oloroso and first fill aged Palo Cortado Sherry butts, which are said to marry together seamlessly to enhance the distinctive distillery character.

These rare, never to be repeated casks were selected with a focus on retaining the natural beauty and balance of the Fettercairn tropical house style, while taking on the bold sweetness of the dark and nutty Oloroso. This is complemented by refined vanilla and citrus notes from the aged Palo Cortado butts, which add complexity and depth to the ripe exotic fruit characters typically found in the Fettercairn spirit when it reaches its mid-late teens.

Gregg Glass, Master Whisky Maker, said, "This one-off Fettercairn 16 Years Old limited edition was borne from fully-matured Sherry casks combined with hand-selected, rare and old, Oloroso and Palo Cortado Sherry butts. For me, this was about retaining the natural beauty and balance of our Fettercairn tropical house style while elevating the pure beauty and refinement of select, aged Palo Cortado and Oloroso casks. Combining these elements allow us to share another aspect and dimension to our truly unique warehouse stocks at Fettercairn."

Fettercairn 16 Year Old 2nd Release 2021 Edition has been bottled at 46.4% ABV, it is naturally coloured and non-chill filtered with a RRP of £69 and once again there will be a travel retail 1 litre bottling available with a RRP of £79.

You will find the Fettercairn 16 Year Old 2nd Release 2021 Edition available from specialist online whisky retailers such as The Whisky Exchange, Amazon and Master of Malt

Fettercairn 16 Year Old 2nd Release 2021 Edition Review

William Morrison's Tasting Notes:

Nose: A honeyed almond nuttiness, a little marmalade, vanilla icing sugar sweetness, pineapple, some distant ginger and milk chocolate.

Taste: A raisin, mango, apricot and lemon fruity mix infused with some lovely oak spice, some sweet vanilla, a touch of late coffee and ginger add to the pleasure.

Finish: A medium length finish brings a tinge of liquorice, a little vanilla icing sugar, a little ginger which all bows out to leave some coffee and late pepper.

Comment: Another top quality Fettercairn 16 year old, lighter on the sherry influence with this 2nd release and it maybe doesn't quite reach the quality of the first release but that was outstanding. But don't get me wrong this is a very good dram, simply less sherried and more subtle and definitely worth the £69 asking price. I have a bottle of the 2020 release in the cupboard which I will revisit and post a link here as I believe it can still be found in some whisky shops and airports if you want a bottle to compare yourself.

I have to say that I am quite impressed with Fettercairn these days, they are certainly turning out some good stuff since they had a revamp of the Fettercairn range.

SMW Score 90/100
