The oldest bottle in my collection is a Cowies Blue Seal dated 1890-1910 by Martin Green in 1996.

I make most of my barrels from new American Oak, also have used new French Oak, and wood from ex whisky and sherry barrels. The wood is either lacquered or just waxed.

I am retired cooper and have been making small barrels most of my life and would not advise to store whisky for any length of time for all the same reasons as bodger gave, woody tasted and loss ...
