I think it can be found in any whisky but no one is really sure how widely it is used. Producers use it mainly to standardise the look of the whisky as whiskies matured in differtet barrels will not be identical in colour and a lot of consumers would not like this. I believe sometimes that an off sherry note is sometimes mistaken for E150a caramel colouring.
