Thank you to everyone that gave suggestions.

As it goes the first, second and third choices weren't in stock at the two shops I went to so I plumbed for the Glenfiddich 18 which was a big hit in the pub with the landlord and a couple of the old malt drinkers who insisted on thanking me on my my choice by buying me a large one.

It's a bit light for my tastes but very nice all the same.

Many thanks again,

Roy

For me or the pub?

For me, god knows. I have quite a few open at the mo and the Snow Pheonix for Xmas day.

For the pub, the Aberlour A'bunadh is next as well as a nice Bruichladdich although I am going to try and find a reasonably priced Auchentoshan as well but we will have to see how the Glenfiddich goes first.

Thanks for all your suggestions, the Glenfiddich 18 went down very well at the pub as did the A'bunadh and most recently an old bottle of Bowmore darkest. The landlord has now developed a taste for a nice malt so I am looking for suggestions again, this time for an easily obtainable lowland or highland whisky for the same budget of £30. Something that you wouldn't normally find in the local but not too peaty or smoky this time.

All suggestions welcome as it's not just for the locals as it is for the landlords newly found love for our spirit.

Many thanks in anticipation.

How about Old Pulteney 12? It should tick all the boxes - it's a great whisky, I've never seen it in a pub, lots of supermarkets have it and it's often on offer at around £20!

If you are looking for a Highland malt this time, as Alex suggests Old Pulteney and i would add Dalwhinnie 15, Aberfeldy 12, Glenmorangie Quinta Ruban port cask which can be found on offer somtimes for around £30

A couple of whiskies on offer in Tesco at the moment from the Speyside region are Glenfiddich 15 Year Old and Balvenie DoubleWood

I would suggest something from Glengoyne 10 or 12 year old -12 yo if you can find it within your budget.

My Lowland whisky suggestion is the Auchentoshan 12 year old or if you can stretch the budget a little the Auchentoshan Three Wood.

As Crane mentions if you can get a bottle of Glenmorangie Quinta Ruban port cask for your money then this is something quite different and very good.

Dalwhinnie 15 as mentioned is always a decent whisky and often found at a decent price. Kennys Glengoyne 12 recommendation for a Highland whisky and Auchentoshan 12 or 3 Wood are very good although you may be hard pushed to get the 3 Wood within your budget but it is one of the best expressions Auchentoshan has IMO.
