Congratulations to OP. Goes to show one of the joys of the malt world - it is the quality in the bottle that does the trick, not the size of a marketing budget!

I noticed that the 2012 Whisky Bible is sold out already over at Amazon. Never mind at least i know what the big winners are now.

Good to see the Highland Park 25 year old get a mention as it is excellent and normally it is the HP 18 and HP 30 that gets allt the praise.

Cheers, just ordered myself a copy. I always like to look through the Whisky Bible for any whiskies Jim Murray thinks is good that i can actually afford such as the Old Pulteney 21. I dont agree with all his tasting notes but when he marks a whisky highly it is usually a good indication that it will be a quality whisky.

I wonder what exactly are Jim Murray's criteria for the whiskies of the year? If OP 21 is the best whisky this year in his opinion, are we to assume that last year it wasn't as good? (I know that's an unlikely assumption, just giving it as an example based on the logic of the awards) Or is it just a matter of rotating the awards to various good whiskies?

Reading between the lines of Jim Murrays quote here
http://www.scotchmaltwhisky.co.uk/whiskybible2012awardwinners.htm

I think he basically doesnt review every whisky every year but revisits them every so often and the very nature of single malts means that there will be slight differences in releases from year to year. This year he revisited the Old Pulteney 21 and it was apparently brilliant.

William, I am sure the difference between batch releases of the Old Pulteney 21 will be negligible but i noticed you have posted a picture of a green tube for the Old Pulteney 21

I take it that the green tube is new packaging as i am only familiar with the gold tube for the OP 21, my point is was it the whisky in the new green tube packaging that Mr Murray named as World Whisky of the Year 2012
Crane makes a very good point, as with the new packaging there will certainly be a new batch of whisky in the bottle, will it be the batch that Mr Murray declares as the best whisky?

Therefore everyone who rushed out and bought up all the stocks of Old Pulteney 21 may not have been buying the same release that Jim Murray declared as his whisky of the year.

I wonder if Old Pulteney will be hurriedly bottling some more OP 21 to suffice the increase in demand in the run up to christmas as there doesnt seem to be any available in the shops i have checked.
