I am sure you will have no problems finding a volunteer to taste it. How did you finally get it to seal, was it just a case of leaving water in it for a while longer.

I dont know if anyone is interested in all this, i dont want to bore you all.
I have had the port in the barrel for a month and so i decided to replace it with my whisky, i know a month wasnt very long but i felt it was time impatient is the word..
anyway just under 2ltrs of whisky went in with a little left to compare, after a few days i had a quick look and it was a beautifull ruby colour, the nose had changed and it didnt taste half bad now time will tell if it works....
I dont know if it is the case but im under the impression that in a small barrel 3 months is similar to a year in a large barrel so i am thinking 1 to 2 months in my barrel will be sufficient........ if anyone is interested ill post more notes as and when i taste again ( hic ) hope it doesnt run out.......... |

I am certainly interested in how it all goes. What whisky did you put into the barrel.

I used the glenfiddich 12 year old as i do like this as a base whisky, it was a choice between this and auchentoshan but i thought if it does not work i havnt wasted the auchentoshan 12 and i dont mind loosing the glenfiddich 12, I know the likes of glenmorangie and auchentoshan work well with other finishes so it seemed a good idea to try something different, my limited taste tells me it does seem to be blending well but only time will tell...
I am alsothinking about buying a few more barrels to try different things, my idea is to age something normal in a barrel that has held bourban and something in either sherry or red wine.... we will see.......... maybe ill even try to make some |

Sorren, if you find a source for decent reasonably priced small oak barrels i would be interested in that, i wouldnt mind trying to do a port finished Islay malt for myself.
Cheers

The best place i have found was "the barrel source" in the states, they do a few combo deals, im just trying to find out what if any taxes there is to pay on importing them into the uk, the deal i want is a 3ltr, a 2ltr and 2 x 1ltr for $113 +$75 for postal, I am also waiting for a reply from a firm in the uk for a price for 2ltr and 3ltr barrels, i know they do a 5ltr oak barrel for around 56pounds, there are also a few on ebay which are made in italy, but i think the deals from the usa are the best ones if taxes are not stupid.... hope this helps...... |

| I looked at sources of barrels from the US a while ago but was never sure if i would get hit with a load of taxes and charges and how much they would be so i gave up on it thinking i may find a UK source but i havent yet. |

Well the whisky has had almost a month in the barrel and it is doing well,
The colour is a deep ruby red,
nose- the port really comes through with a few floral notes, picking up a faint vanilla note,
taste- smooth and sweet, theres fruit in there with an oakiness to it,vanilla and toffee i think, there seems to be a lot going on but i think its finishing well.
finish-the finish is quite long, the fruit seems to stay in the mouth although the wood seems to be the last thing you taste.... |
