Maybe Caol Ila 12 or Ardbeg 10 might be worth a crack, how much is the Ardbeg your way? Laph maybe, but people tend to think it's pretty iodine. Lagavulin is defiitely rich and meaty and not very iodiine imo, but I'm probably the wrong person to give you advice on this element as I don't tend to pick up strongly on the iodine notes of peated whisky.
What about whisky samples, can you get acess to some for a relatively low price? I'd offer to send some to you if you wanted to order cheap from master of malt or someplace but because of medical issues I can't really mail things out at the momment (and don't even know what restrictions there are on sending alcohol airmail into the states or canada)

Thanks for the suggestions. I can get Caol Ila 12 so I might give that a shot in the future. I actually did some more reading and watched some videos and I decided to give Johnnie Walker Double Black a shot and while it's a blend it was I think exactly what I was looking for as a beginner. Had a nice smokey flavor which I now kind of get. Didn't really notice any medicinal or iodine or band-aid. Super smooth neat. Didn't bother with water or ice. I really liked it. I wouldn't drink it everyday but on a Friday night or in the winter when it's cold out it seems ideal as it was as pleasant/easy to sip as the Glenfiddich 15 was.

Caol Ila is likely one of the main smokey whiskies contributing to the smoke you will find in the Johnnie Walker Double Black so i am sure you will enjoy Caol Ila 12 when you get a chance to taste it.
