Short on the views about the pricing in Sainsbury's (lucky those who got it for £19.99), how does it taste?

Hi supersinglemalts and welcome to the SMW forum. This is what i posted about it based on my first impressions:
Quote:
I just got a bottle of the Rich Oak from Sainsburys myself earlier this evening. Just had my first taste of it and i thought it was a very nice dram. The spicy oak is at the forefront on the nose with some fruit and toffee, a little grass. The taste is spicy, a lovely light vanilla sweetness, fruity, oaky spice. Quite a long oaky finish.

I have now gotten through about 3/4 of the bottle of the Rich Oak, and as with any whisky you kind of become more familiar with it the more you have it. The zesty spiced oak is always there from start to finish, if you like this characteristic then you will love it but if you are not keen on the spicey oak you may be disappointed with this.

Hello and thank you for the welcome.

It sounds like it might be similar to The Glenlivet 15 year old French Oak, have you tried this and would you draw comparisons?

Yes you could draw comparisons with the Glenlivet French Oak as far as the spicy oaky characteristic is concerned but it still has its own unique Glenfiddich character. Like the French Oak the Rich Oak does not have a great deal of complexity, i enjoyed it but i have to say the £40 price tag Sainburys has on it is not worth it but if you can find it closer to the standard Glenfiddich 12 year old price it is certainly worth at least one go especially if you enjoy the Glenlivet French Oak.

sorren, I actually received a couple of replys from Sainburys about this a few weeks ago and meant to post them here, anyway this is what they said:

Basically the first response i got said this:
Quote:
The setting of pricing in Sainsbury's is an independent decision and is made irrespective of RRP. Decisions are made based on the market and change only at our own discretion. This particular Glenfiddich whisky is a rare blend and not one you see in most supermarket shelves.

When i pointed out to them that this was neither rare nor a blend they then sent this reponse:
Quote:
Dear William

Thanks for your email. I'm sorry you weren't happy with my response. I can understand how annoying this was especially as you correctly point out that the Glenfiddich Rich Oak is not a rare blend of whisky.

The setting of pricing in Sainsbury's is an independent decision and is made irrespective of RRP. Our buyers monitor the world markets on a regular basis and decisions are made based on those international prices and change only at our own discretion.

We appreciate you taking time to contact us with further information and giving us the opportunity to respond to your query.

As you can see they failed to give a good reason why they are charging so much above the RRP but in each communication i had from them they made it clear that they set the price and Glenfiddich had nothing to do with it.

William that is just the kind of reply i would have expected, i am sure they dont sell much of it as their customers are not stupid. At least you pulled them up on their pricing, it was worth a try.

I would think they have shot themselves in the foot with regards to their pricing of the Rich Oak, i wouldnt dream of buying it for £40.

Given this sort of pricing policy it comes as no surprise that Sainsburys today defied city expectations by announcing a 17% rise in annual profits.
