Hi i am new to the forum and have been browsing through old posts hoping to find some suggestions for for whiskies to try. I have just finished my first botlle of Ardbeg Uigeadail and i thought it was superb. Top Malt

Can anyone suggest any whiskies that have high peat and are sherry matured.

Thanks

Creed

Hi Creed, I would highly recommend trying the Lagavulin Distillers Edition which is Lagavulin which has been finished in sherry casks.

The Lagavulin DE that McKay mentions is probably the best peat/sherry whisky next to the Ardbeg Uigeadail. Another i would suggest is the Bowmore 1990 16 Year Old Sherry Cask which is also very good.

Also try the Talisker Distillers edition, which isn't as smokey, but still has some peat to it, and has a luscious juicy sherry finish, and is one of my all time favourite single malts.
I've not tried the Lagavulin Distillers edition yet, but it is on my shopping list for next time I order some more! Smile

If money was no object i wouldnt mind trying the Laphroaig 1981 27 Year Old Oloroso Sherry Cask but until then the Uigeadail and Lagavulin DE are my choice of peaty sherried whisky.

Not highly peated but the Secret Stills series from Gordon & Macphail has a few good sherried malts. I enjoyed the Secret Stills 4.9 1991 which is Bowmore and the Secret Stills No 1.2 1986 whisch originates from Talisker.

I am just echoing what others have said but IMO Lagavulin DE and Ardbeg Uigeadail. are the 2 best peated/sherried malts out their in this price range at least.

Thanks so much for all your responses, it looks like the Lagavulin Distillers Edition is the one for me to try and i think i will get another bottle of Uigeadail.

A bit late to the discussion but it sounds like Bowmore Enigma fits the bill perfectly. It's basically the standard 12 year-old plus sherry casks. I noticed in a different thread people were objecting to the type of smokiness in Bowmore, but in the case of the Enigma it's tempered by the sherry sweetness quite nicely. I haven't tried that Lagavulin but the Enigma would certainly be a reasonably good deal, as you'd get a 1 litre bottle for £35 or so.

The bowmore enigma is exclusive to duty free or travel retail as they call it now, so not always easy to get. I did get myself a bottle of it the other week when traveling through prestwick airport for just under £25 as it was on offer. The enigma is a decent dram especially for £25 for a litre but personally i prefer the standard 12 year old.

The Bowmore Enigma is not exclusive to travel retail any more, that's why I recommended it. It's available at The Whisky Exchange for around £37 for example, which is still decent for 1 litre. It's often available for less at various airports though. Personally, like Archer I prefer it to the standard 12 year-old.

According to the Bowmore website The Bowmore Enigma is still a travel retail exclusive which can also be purchased direct from the bowmore distllery shop but like many other travel retail bottlings they find there way into the whisky specialist shops such as The Whisky Exchange.

I have had some excellent Port Ellen sherry-cask IB's from Douglas Laing; my favorite of about 5 tried was a McGibbon's Provenance 1982/2001 18yo winter distillaiton bottling. Cadenhead had a sherry cask ardbeg about 6 yrs ago that was great too. As noted, there just isn't a huge selection of OB sherry casks to choose from. Sad

Have NOT had a laphroaig or caol ila sherry-cask, ever.

Douglas Laing just seem to keep releasing excellent Port Ellen bottlings, i think the founder of DL, Fred Douglas Laing must have been wise enough to tuck away a whole load of Port Ellen. Hopefully they still have a load more to come in the future.
