I have a straight choice between Glenfiddich 15 Solera and Bowmore 15 Darkest to give as a gift to a friend. I know he's keen to try both - as I've never had either, I'm not sure what to choose. He enjoys both Islay and Speyside so it's not a matter of whether he'd like smoky/sherry or light.

So, which one would you recommend?

I would recomend the Bowmore,

Nice peppered, peaty smokyness (not as much as Ardbeg or Laphroaig)
and sweet marzipan / toffee and of course sherry!

This Bowmore Darkest treats you to a lovely long and warm finish.

Better than the 18yo Bowmore!

Personally as a gift i would give the Glenfiddich 15 Solera a delicious high quality single malt it is the one most people are likely to prefer and i personally wouldnt rate the Bowmore darkest very highly it wasnt to my taste even though i do like Bowmore.

Hmm, hard to choose. My personal favourite of the two is the Glenfiddich - best of the core Glenfiddich range in my opinion. I do like the Bowmore Darkest as well though. I agree with JAB it's better than the 18.

Both are good just different, if you where in doubt about your friends tastes then i would go for the Glenfiddich. But you are not and he is keen to buy both, just a case of choosing one as i said they are both different drinks i wouldnt say one is better than the other.

Thanks guys! As it happens, I ended up giving in to the Christmas spirit of excessive shopping and bought both! I think I'll keep the Glenfiddich for myself and give him the Bowmore, since I already have a sherried Bowmore (the Enigma) but no Glenfiddich.

The Glenfiddich 15 is my choice from the Gelnfiddich range for affordable everyday drams. When splashing out the Glenfiddich 18 and really splashing out the 30. I also like the Bowmore Darkest but not had it for quite a while.
