Does anyone here know a decent source for a mini whisky barrel, preferably here in the UK. I have always fancied messing around with my own finishes but i am lacking the barrel to do it.

I have seen mini barrels available in distillery shops in the past and if you ever visit the Speyside Cooperage they sell them but they are quite expensive i think this is due to the work that goes into producing a small cask. Unfortunately i dont think the Speyside Cooperage sells the small casks online. I think they sold them for around £80 but i am sure they are good quality, not sure if you get a choice oak i.e european or american oak.

You beat me to it!
was goin to ask the same question.
i have been looking about online and can ony find www.1000oaksbarrel.com

I have also been looking on ebay and found a few nice listings, but again not from the uk, they are either from mexico or italy. just type in oak cask in the search bar.

I am thinking of buying a 2ltr one from mexico via ebay and it will be £16.03 for it but the shipping is £22.45 so works out at £38.48 for a 2ltr.

But if you buy 2 the shipping is around £35 - works out to be £32 a cask

(Plus they personalise it for free, name / logo etc!

The listing is - http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=180489598952&ssPageName=STRK:MEWAX:IT If interested!

They also do bigger ones eg 5ltr 10ltr etc

Hope this helps

god look at the 'make your own highland scotch' kits on that site - grain whisky, highland malt 'essence' and a cask! That should be illegal!

those casks look pretty darn cool, not sure if i'd have the patience to experiment with finishes though as I would take more than my angels share!

great idea to finish your own whisky how you like it, i wouldnt mind giving some Ardbeg a port finish. I would just be worried that these barrels are new oak and they could overpower the whisky.

Bookmarked this from 'Master of Malt' a few years ago and I see it's still available. Interesting to read the reviews too:

http://www.ebay.com/itm/Oak-cask-barrel-Barrels-3-liter-Thickness-2-2-cm-for-Whisky-brass-tap-/271187703419?hash=item3f240bf67b:g:EkAAAOSwJ4hY-ZUV

I've been loving this one! Great thick barrel!

ps. glenfarclas 105 is great for barrels! 60% and <35€ per litre.
Add some cheap peated islay there (finlaggan f.ex.) and you got nice blend ready for barrel maturation.

I just bought a barrel from American Oak Barrels. I get it Tuesday. Since I can't find a malt spirit here in the States I plan to put Troy and Sons Heirloom Whiskey (corn whiskey) in it. I plan to keep notes.
