I'm contemplating a more 'unusual' whisky (on a budget!) for my next buy and would like some opinions on some whiskies that don't normally come up in recommendations here. I'm looking at Glendronach 12 Original and 15 Revival. Are they as good as the write-ups on The Whisky Exchange website suggest? I'm also thinking about the Cragganmore Distiller's Edition - how does it compare to the regular Cragganmore?
Some other stuff I'd appreciate some opinions on: Tomatin 12, Benriach 12, Ben Nevis 10 and Aberfeldy 12.
Thanks in advance! |

I have a bottle of the Glendronach 15 Revival at the moment and it is superb a lovely rich sherried whisky. The Glendronach 12 year old is also very good but my personal preference is the Revival.
The Benriach 12 is on offer at TWE at the moment and certaiinly worth the £23 they are asking a nice medium bodied fruity, vanilla, honeyed, floral Speysider not the most complex whisky but very pleasant easy to drink malt and definitely worth the price TWE are asking for it.
I think the Aberfeldy 12 was mentioned on another thread recently as a malt that is often over looked. I think it is an excellent whisky, full bodied, sweet honey, orange a bit of spice, toasted cereal, love it, easy to drink anytime. |

| Alex if it is the Cragganmore 1993 DE you are looking at it is delicious, sweet toffee, fruity oranges, cherries, bit of smoke, delicious long finish. Very tempted to get another bottle as it is £6 off at TWE at the moment. |

Ben Nevis 10 is a malt that is overlooked IMO and you rarely hear given the praise it deserves. A great full bodied highlander sweet ripe fruit, malty, oaky you can chew your way through it.
As already said the Glendronach 15 Revival and Aberfeldy are both very good. |

| The Tomatin 12 is a lightly sherried Speysider, sweet, fruity, bit of spice toffee a decent whisky and usually a decent price. In fact they are all decent whiskies you mention (cant comment on the Cragganmore DE as i havent tried it). My first choice out of them all would be the Aberfeldy 12 followed by the Glendronach 15 |

The Cragganmore Distillers Edition is different from most of the other distillers edition in that is portwood finished, i think most of the othe DE's are sherry wood finished. I would agree with Alastair it is delicious and certainly falls into your search for a "more 'unusual' whisky (on a budget!)" Alex.
As Bookie says all the whiskies you mention are decent just depends what you want to spend and what style you are in the mood for. The way i look at it is i will get to them all eventually (well the bottles within my budget).

James: you're right, I'll get to all the bottles eventually, it's just so tough to decide what to get when you can afford just one at any given time! I think so far I've narrowed it down (not very well!!) to Cragganmore DE, Aberfeldy, Benriach and Grendronach.
Alastair: it is indeed the 1993 Cragganmore DE, might actually snap it up before the offer ends.
McKay: Is the Glendronach 12 as heavily sherried as the 15? Also I noticed that the 15 is 46% ABV - is it unchillfiltered? |
