I am really interested in buying a cask, preferably an islay distillery!
The problem is the inital outlay and then storage and bottling!
Just wondering if any one knows of and groups / forums doing a group buy at the moment?
(If anyone is thinking of buying a cask, and needs an extra partner for the venture I am very interested)
Thanks John |

| I have thought about it but what has put me off is having a load of the same whisky at the end of it. |

Yes i know what you meen! but if you get enough people to venture into it this will limit the costs etc.
Thats why i am wondering if there are any forums buying any say 20+ people!
Hopefully the over all cost would be around the £100 mark with maybe 20 bottles or so each out of it? (less the older it gets) |

JAB,
Only distillery that does casks is Bruichladdich I think. Not sure when or if Kilchoman are releasing any casks but this is the one I'd look at. You could ask any distillery doing casks if they'd allow you to split it, I know Bladnoch are happy to split the cask up between 10 and do all the paperwork accordingly, just not sure Laddie or Kilchoman would.
Anyway I know where to come knocking when my Laddie Cask is ready!
Rob
Ps- Would live a cask of Ben Nevis! |

As far as i am aware you would have no chance of getting a kilchoman, last a herd they where trying to buy them back!
As for bruichladdich i wouldnt mind trying to get a syndicate going on a cask of this!
but would consider any distillery!
If i had the chance would try and get one from bowmore but i dont think they do private cask sales |

Its obviously not an Islay but i know Bladnoch website sells casks and cask shares. Gives a good indication of the costs anyway. The initial cost seems reasonable but once tax and bottling costs are added it soon mounts up.

| wonder how many would make it worth the "gamble"....or "joy" to make it worth 20 bottles each? |

Buying a cask of Bladnoch:
Number of Bottles (70cl): 286 approx
Duty to Pay (£): 3023
VAT on Duty (£): 453
Final Cost (not including bottling) (£): 4676
Final Cost (including bottling) (£): 5391
Cost Per Bottle (£): 19
So.. 10 people buy a cask total outlay each - £539.10 and gives you around 28 bottles each, costing just over £19 per bottle |

| My problem is I am to impatient and couldnt wait 8 - 10 years to get hold of the whisky not unless it was from a distillery i particularly like but unfortunately there the ones that dont sell casks. |

yes true 10 years is a long time to wait, but you do get a sample every year from the distillery |

John,
I recently bought a cask of Bruichladdich Lochindaal for my new born son (planning to bottle it in 21 years) and can attest that it's pricey! I'd definitely be game to join a syndicate with you and other like minded persons to get my hands on something a little sooner though. I have a few friends here on my side of the Pond that would be happy to join as well. I've also put together a nice spreadsheet that I'd be happy to share. |

| Also, it appears Bladnoch is selling casks of other distilleries at various ages, so one could buy a cask that it quite far along and closer to bottling. Of course, the price goes up the older the cask. |

The thought of having a load of the same whisky at the end of it kind of puts me off a bit as i like to have a variety of malts and i am a bit impatient and dont fancy waiting a number of years to taste the whisky which may not turn out to be great, Yes you save a few pounds per bottle but for me i would rather spend a few extra pounds and have the whisky i know i will enjoy now. Unless as Forbes says | Quote: | | not unless it was from a distillery i particularly like but unfortunately there the ones that dont sell casks |
All the best to you who goes for it, just not for me. |
