Spirit of Speyside Whisky Awards 2011 Finalists Announced
The Scottish Parliament building at Holyrood was once again fragrant with whisky when 52 Speyside malts were nosed and tasted by a panel of expert judges.
The Spirit of Speyside Whisky Awards are firmly established as one of the most prestigious annual whisky competitions. The first round of the competition was a blind tasting which took place at Holyrood (by kind invitation of Richard Lochhead MSP).
The finals of the Awards will take place during the Spirit of Speyside Whisky Festival at the Knockando Distillery just before the start of the Opening Dinner on Thursday 28th April. Visitors to the Festival can take part in the final judging process. The winners will be announced during theOpening Dinner.
The judges selected two finalists for each of the three categories:
Up to 12 years old:
Aberlour a'bunadh
Balvenie Signature 12 year old 13-20 years old:
The Glenlivet 15 year old
The Glenlivet 18 year old Over 20 years old:
Balvenie Portwood 21 year old
Glenfiddich 30 year old MSP Richard Lochhead hosted a reception following the judging in the parliament attended by MSPs, whisky industry representatives, representatives of the tourism sector, national and international press and others.
Jim Royan, chairman of the Spirit of Speyside Whisky Festival Board, said: "These whiskies are the expressions of the highest quality of Speysides' wonderful spirit. I'm sure that their success will confirm their international recognition."
So what would your winner be in each of the three categories |

Mine too. Though I'd have gone for the Balvenie Doublewood had it been shortlisted over the Signature. A bit strange that the Glenlivet 15 was chosen over, say, its Glenfiddich and Glenfarclas counterparts, let alone the Macallan 18. |

I assume the Glenlivet 15 will be the standard 15 year old French Oak reserve as there is a travel retail Glenlivet 15 which is not done in French oak which i hadnt come across before until a couple of months ago at the airport, not even sure how long that has been around. |

I wasn't aware of the travel retail Glenlivet 15. How does it compare to the French oak? I don't think the latter is bad per se, I'm just surprised at the selection since something like the Glenfiddich 15 or Macallan 18 would've made more worthy adversaries to the Glenlivet 18.
The Glenlivet do some really good travel retail editions - the 12 year old First Fill is a fantastic whisky and better than the regular 12 in my opinion. |

| I think the travel retail Glenlivet 15 year old came out about 2005, you never hear it mentioned anywhere. It is a 3 year older version of the standard 12 year old as far as i know. I had a taste of it passing through Glasgow airport once but didnt buy due to limited cabin baggage allowance but it was very good and what you would expect from a longer matured Glenlivet |

The 20 years old category is bit more difficult to decide both the Balvenie Portwood 21 year old and Glenfiddich 30 year old are excellent but i will give my vote to the Glenfiddich 30. |
