I am going to buy my dad a bottle of whiskey for his birthday.

I aint a whiskey drinker, so don't know anything etc.

he likes single malt.

I am looking at Glenlivet 1996 / 14 Year Old / Sherry Butt #105515
http://www.thewhiskyexchange.com/P-12963.aspx
or
Caol Ila 8 Year Old / Unpeated / Bot. 2007
http://www.thewhiskyexchange.com/P-7241.aspx

anyone know if either of these are good?

any other recommendations?

Budget of £50 on the whiskey exchange

thanks

Caol ila is nice, could also try the 12yo http://www.thewhiskyexchange.com/P-1619.aspx

Or Caol ila distillers edition - http://www.thewhiskyexchange.com/P-9683.aspx

If he likes islay whiskies could try Lagavulin 16yo http://www.thewhiskyexchange.com/P-3121.aspx

Or try Glenlivet 1992 - http://www.thewhiskyexchange.com/P-13609.aspx

hi ctarry

You mention Glenlivet and Caol ila, are these whisky brands that you already know he likes. If you tell us the name of some whiskies that you know he already enjoys then we should be able to direct you to some other good whiskies that he will enjoy.

these are 2 that he does like, so i thought i might play it safe, instead of splashing out on something that he doesn't like

he does also like the usual stuff you get in supermarkets (glenfiddich, grouse etc) but i want to get him something a bit different

i forget to mention Glenallachie (which he likes)

The Whisky Exchange have a bottle of Glenlivet 1991 Nadurra Triumph on offer at the moment in there Special Offers Section

The Caol Ila 8 Year Old Unpeated is a special release and is very good indeed but may not be to everyones taste as it is unpeated.

The Caol Ila 12 Year Old Unpeated 2010 special release is also excellent. The Nadurra as metioned above is also excellent.

The Glenlivet from your link is an independent bottling, so that would be its special attraction. For a special Glenlivet I'd still recommend the Glenlivet Nadurra though. If he likes Caol Ila, he will probably also like Bowmore - for under £50 you can get the Bowmore Tempest: http://www.thewhiskyexchange.com/P-12865.aspx

Other special whiskies at that price range are the Talisker 57 degrees North, the new Bunnahabhain 12 year-old (great value for money) and the Ardbeg Uigedail.
