to sell or not to sell

foundation reserve seems to be along with ebay a toutchy subject for some people ! £330 seems to be a lot of money for abottle that cost £53 , i must admit i have thought about selling one of my bottles for it has such a great return in such a short period of time ! is this the problem that people have with the guy on ebay or is it that they didnt manage to get a bottle themselves, if the guy on ebay had only sold the bottle for £75 there would be no fuss , i myself drink whisky but also have a collection as i would guess most do that are members of the forum, we like to think that we have bought bargains at times whether it be for drinking or for collecting, we would like to think that our collection has went up in value and that we have invested well, perhaps to make us feel better about ourselves or for some people to sell when they have made a good investment . if you bought a bottle for £53 had it in a collection or cupboard for 10 years waiting for the right time to open , you by chance find out the bottle you had forgotten about was now worth £3,000 what would you do ? sell or not to sell !
personally i think that the foundation has been given a lot by glenfiddich 500 bottles and sold for £53 / bottle quite a tidy sum.

I say fair play to the lad, maybe even a bit jealous....but its not in the spirit of things!

I like to think of always adding value to my 'collection' and drinking the 'interest' over time. Although im in very young stages only got about 10 collected bottles rest are drinking...maybe in a few years I'll be up with some of the heavy rollers on this forum ha.

The difference with the Foundation Reserve, is that the Foundation sold it so cheap, when they could have easily sold all of the stock for double what they charged, and as a charity, I think people are a bit annoyed at someone clearly buying all they could get to simply profit from the charities generosity.
I guess selling 1 bottle might be easy money and accepted, but to sell 1 bottle and immediately put another up seems simple profiteering off the back off a charity, and I wouldn't be surprised to see bottle 3 from the same seller in a few days.

I am not taking any moral high ground personally, as it could be a very sensitive subject, but simply stating what I am sure people are thinking.

Personally, I bought 3 bottles, 1 for me (already open ), 1 for a colleague at work who has also opened his, and 1 last bottle for me to take on holiday to the USA in 3 weeks, as we are staying with relatives, of which one is an avid Scotch drinker, and will love this bottle, but rest assured I will be demanding he open it so we can enjoy!

i bought mine to drink but £330 is very tempting, i dont think i can recall any bottle that has made this % of instant profit. If someone wants to sell their bottle, good luck to them but as Tom says it is not in the spirit of things.

i dont think we will see many on ebay as i think most of the sales were generated through this website so i would assume most bottles went to whisky enthusiasts who would have known they were getting a unique whisky at a good price. So many will be drank i think or put away by collectors.

i have no doubt we will see a few more on ebay but mine are for drinking. I have no problem with anyone buying and selling whisky for example their was loads of the Macallan Royal Marriage bottling but the fact this bottle was to raise money for a charity is bound to get up a few noses when it has been purchased for an instant profit off the back of Glenfiddichs and the Benevolents generosity.

I understand what you are saying about not in the spirit of things, maybe its not but who are we to judge, it maybe need and not greed for his reason to sell, we dont know his circumstances , i am not condoning the actions of ebayers but each to his own.
he maybe a whisky drinker or collector in which case he could buy a few more whiskys to drink or collect. i know that when charities are involved its toutchy and you have to tread lightly as not to upset anyone, i myself give to a charity on a regular basis and the charity runs a lottery which i won £1500 not so long ago , have i to donate this back into the charity as i have profited ?

well no woodynd, i'm sure the charity earnt enough money running the lottery!

I don't have a particularly strong objection it just seems that he has bought this bottle for the sole purpose of the quick buck!

It is interesting though...what is the ultimate 'end game' of all these whisky collections? to sell, to drink, to pass on?

personally i dont have an obejection to anyone selling there bottles, the way i see it is the charity has made their money, they probably could have sold such a unique bottle for more but decided to sell it for £50. Would they have sold so fast if they had charged more? I will drink one and put one away until the mood takes me to drink it, perhaps in a few years.

I bought 2 bottles.....Well, I think I did!!!! I ordered them, but I havent recieved them yet, and Im getting very pessimistic about it now. Ill have to ring on Tuesday.


But one is for me, the other is for my son......I wouldnt sell mine, as I have quite a collection of Glenfiddich (my son always bought me a bottle on fathers day) theyre just standard bottles bar the Snow Pheonix and 1991.

His bottle he was going to open and share this fathers day. For me, thats worth more than £330.

If it was £3300 Id HAVE to sell it due to simple economics. We all have a price, of that im certain. Im just not cheap :

I tried to get his Birthday and month on his bottle.....when he gives me it Ill whip it away to go with the other ones he's got me over the years and I'll open mine. The wife would always but the same bottle as him so that Id have one to drink.

That would leave me with 1 bottle, with my sons birth day and month......I wouldnt sell it for the earth.
