It's my wee brother's 21st birthday coming up and I was considering getting him a 21 year old whisky from 1990. I had a look on Whisky Exchange and the two whisky's I found were:

Clynelish 1990 / 21 Year Old / Old Malt Cask #6939
http://www.thewhiskyexchange.com/P-14053.aspx

and

Auchroisk 1990 / 21 Year Old / Old Malt Cask #7045
http://www.thewhiskyexchange.com/P-14325.aspx

What do you think of these two whiskys? Are there any others in the same price range?

Also, could someone explain the Old Malt Cask bit please?

Thanks,
G

G Old Malt Cask is a series of bottlings from independent bottler Douglas Laing. Here is some useful links to some oinfo on indepenedent bottlers and Douglas Laing

I havent tasted the Clynelish or Auchroisk bottlings you mention but in general the Clynelish is medium bodied, oily, malty, fruity with lots of spice and hints of peat, seaweed and smoke. Auchroisk in general is malty, spice, nuty, floral, fruity. In my experience Douglas Laing turns out some very good whisky and anything i have tried from their OMC series has been very good. Personally my choice would be the Clynelish.

i am sure there will be others in the same price range, just a case of shopping around. Many distilleries also have some very good 21 year old whiskies in their core ranges of whisky such as Balvenie 21 Portwood, Glenfiddich 21 and Glengoyne 21

G,

You may find if you do enough digging that you can get a bottle which was bottleled on his actual birthday , which would be an even nicer touch. Now don't ask me about how to find out this information as I don't have a clue, but some of the more sage members of this forum could possibly help.

to get a 21 year old on his 21st birthday he would have to go to the bottling plant!!

both of those bottles seem good and a fair price. right year, right age. cant go wrong Smile

It would be awesome if I could get one from his birthday but surely that will a) cost more and b) not actually be available till his birthday therefore too late...
