Shackletons Mackinlays Whisky Wins Innovation Award

Whyte & Mackay has won the Whisky Magazine's Innovator of the Year Award for its recreation of a 100 year old whisky left under the Antarctic ice by famous explorer Ernest Shackleton.

Described as the "whisky story of the century", the so-called Shackleton replica - properly known as Mackinlay's - was four years in the making by the time the whisky was found, excavated, shipped to Scotland and finally reproduced.

National Geographic also recorded an exclusive documentary about the whole process which is due to air at the end of this year.

I tried the Shackletons Mackinlays at whisky live Glasgow on Saturday, they were pouring it in the VIP area and i have to say it was very good.

I wonder if Whyte & Mackay plan on giving us a standard bottling of Mackinlays in the future which is priced for everyday drinking.

How close to the original Whisky was the reproduction?
Who got to taste it ?
And how much would the original bottle go for today ?

Alan i dont think they actually stopped producing the Oringinal Mackinlay whisky, i believe it was only available in a few markets but not the UK. Curiously i think one of its main markets was New Zealand and Australia (didnt Shackletons expedition kick off from this part of the world). The Oringinal Mackinlay whisky in the pic was a blended whisky not a blended malt like Shackletons.

I would guess that perhaps they may have stopped producing it some time in the last few years when W & M came up with the idea of re-producing the bottles Ernest Shackleton took to the south pole.
