Hey
recently I've been trying to get my good freinds into enjoying and apreciating whisky rather than walker red and jack daniels...
We're all 18, yesterday we had a few Glen Moray 12 year old's for graduation which I thought would be a good smooth sweet choice? for everyone to enjoy which they seemed to like.
I'm a fan of laphroaig's quater cask and the Lagavulin 16 i've tried before. But I think they are maybe too overpowering for the other guys.
Could you recomend a few interesting yet aproachable and not overly expensive single malts please? (that are available in australia)
Be great if you could, cheers. |

Hey and welcome to SMW
You seem to like the peat monsters like myself, a good entry level Islay malt that you friends might appreciate would be the Bowmore 12yo, its a nice smooth dram and not over powering on the peat front, and should be easy to pick up in Australia.
If your friends are just starting out then could maybe try the Macallan 10, Talisker 10, auchentoshan 12yo and Glenmorangie these should all be readily availble to you and are good entry level malts
Not sure what would be availible to you over there but if you can find a decent whisky shop then they should have bottles open to sample before you buy.
Another of my favourites is Isle of Arran malt, every bottle i have tried has not disapointed and they also do a lightly peated one at 14ppm called machrie moor, the batch 2 will be released this month so maybe one to watch out for also.

A few i will add to what John mentioned which i always consider great whiskies for those new to malt whisky and for seasoned connoisseurs alike are Glengoyne 10, Balvenie 12 Doublewood, Highland Park 12, Caol ila 12 (for a bit of smoke). Glenmorangies range is excellent try the 10 year old and the Quinta Ruban.
That should keep you going for a while, enjoy.
Cheers, Alastair |

Ah thank you. Most of what you recomended is readily available for about 65-70$. The Arran might be a tad harder.
I'll try and pick up a bottle when i've got some spare money. I'd love to run out and grab a some now, but there's lifes other expenses to attend to and final exams coming up makes it hard to justify. |

| Try to get hold of the new Bunnahabhain 12yo which is not chill filtered and bottled at 46.3%. In my opinion it's a level above what been mentioned before and in the UK is only about £35. Certainly one of the best 'bang for buck' malts on the market. |

The 46.3% unchilfiltered Bunnahabhain is vastly superior to the old Bunna, and not just because of the higher ABV and non chil filter. It's a different flavour profile as well with more sherry casks in the vatting.
The new improved 18yo is absolutely stunning, but is around £70, although well worth it in my opinion. |
