Hi I have a few other bottles that I could use some guidance on private sale valuations. They are:
Ardbeg 1975, Ardbeg 1978 (both bottles at the end of 90's by MacDonald & Muir - distillery owners)
Also Ardbeg 17YO

Hi Gillian

As you may already know these bottles are rare and very collectable so should fetch a very good price.

Ardbeg was bought and reopened by Macdonald & Muir, the owners of Glenmorangie in 1997. The Ardbeg distillery was producing whisky again by 25th June 1997. When Macdonald & Muir bought the distillery they also acquired some stock which enabled them to release whisky. One of the first whiskies they launched was the Ardbeg 17 year old, a little later (1998/1999 i believe) they launched the Ardbeg 1978 vintage which was about 20 years old and a Ardbeg 1975 vintage which was about 23 years old.

As far as value, in a private sale or selling at auction you would get:

Ardbeg 17 year old - approx £100 - £200
Ardbeg 1975 - approx £120 - £220
Ardbeg 1978 - approx ££120 - £220

The price can vary greatly depending on the bidders on the day.

In a whisky shop you would pay a bit more for these, the 17 year old would be £200, the 1975 & 1978 would be around £350. In a private sale you would expect to get around half the price you would see the whisky selling for in a shop. But as Ardbeg is so popular you could realise close to the shop price at auction. Quite often ebay can be the most profitable place to sell whisky, just be sure to set an appropriate reserve price

Cheers

Alastair
