I often make my own blended whisky, usually blend together the last few drops of bottles i have been drinking which are almost finished. Normally i would blend together 2 or 3 single malts, sometimes with excellent results and sometimes not so good.

Anyway i thought i would start this thread were we can list our blend attempts and results good or bad.

One that i often do is blending some Aberlour 10 with some Laphroaig 10, the ratio is 2/3 Laphroaig with 1/3 Aberlour and the result i think is excellent.

So whats your blending attempts Question

Mac, i have messed around in the past with a few mixes. One i done recently was Caol ila 12 and Dalwhinnie 15, about 50/50 mix, it was ok but i would say individually they were better than the mix. I suppose the ratio of the mix makes a huge difference.

Was tempted to try blending a bottle of Ledaig I had as I wasn't particularly enjoying it but couldn't face potentially wasting any of my other whisky's I was enjoying by blending it so just drank it hoping it would grow on me. It kind of did, it to me is an interesting flavour if not massively enjoyable.

When home blending to you leave them to marry at all or just whack into a tumbler and stir?

Ever experimented with popping in some wood chips of the kind you get for home smoking and leaving for a couple of months. Could get very interesting if you got hold of some hickory (or even juniper!) or other wood barrels arn't normally made from and left them in some young whisky for a year or so.

I assume the Ledaig was the old bottling and not the new Ledaig 10 unchill filtered with no added colouring, the new bottling is vastly improved on the old bottling of Ledaig.

When home blending i basically just whack into a glass and and stir, well kind of, i would start with my main whisky then add a drop at a time of another , tasting each time i add a drop.

The last Samson blended malt limited release was a blend of Caol ila 12 and Highland Park 12, about a 70/30 mix, it turned out pretty good but i have to say that was after i had already tasted a few Very Happy

I often dabble with blending, at one point i was was blending together the last drop (around 20ml) from every bottle i finished until i filled a bottle, which wasnt such a good idea. Now i just stick to bending 2 or 3 together. Recently mixed some Ardbeg 10 and some Glengoyne 12 cask strength and it was pretty good IMO, the mix was approx 60/40

I added some Macallan 10 fine oak to some Ardbeg, a 50/50 ratio and it turned out quite good.

I was inspired by this to make my own Laphroaig 10/Aberlour 10 blend and you're right, it works well! You get the Aberlour sweetness first and then the smoke and medicinal flavours kick in. Not bad. Plus my Aberlour 10 is 43% ABV so it brings up the overall strength up a bit, which suits the Laphroaig.

I might make this Aberloaig a more regular drink!

I have been sorting out my bottles with only a few drinks left in them and ended up messing around with some blending. Anyway one good result i have come up with was a blend of Aberlour 10 about 50ml, Laphroaig 10 30ml and Ardbeg 10 20ml. I found it very drinkable.

ive never tried to make a good blend but I do have half an old litre bottle full of stuff I dont like. the mix at the mo is mainly dalmore 15, cardhu 12, lidl's 'ben bracken' and royal lochnagar 12! I drink it when I don't feel so wealthy, it isnt great.

Sometimes even a small amount of heavily peated whisky can massively improve a poor blended malt IMO. Best trying in out on a small amount first.
