Hello all, I'm currently undecided between The Glenlivet 18 and Glenfiddich 15 Solera, I've had a few bottles of the glenlivet 12 and loved it, the only problem I've got with it is it goes down too well , I've tried a small sample of the solera and loved it, it was in one of them gift packs you get at xmas, 5cl of the 12, 15 and 18yr old.
I'm usually into my Laphroaig 10 and QC but I fancy something different.
Any recommendations other than the two I've mentioned here?
Cheers. |

I would normally take a Glenlivet over a Glenfiddich, but not this Glenlivet over this Glenfiddich! I think the Glenfiddich Solera is the best out of the Glenfiddich core range, i.e. between 12-18. The Glenlivet 18 on the other hand, even though it's by no means a bad whisky, was a slight disappointment for me. It's quite sweet and full-bodied and makes an excellent introduction to whisky I think, but to be honest I prefer the 12, and especially the 12 First Fill - I find them both more vibrant, spicy and fresh-tasting than the 18. But, this is just my opinion, others here value the Glenlivet 18 much higher.
If you want to try a new Glenlivet, however, why not get the Nadurra, if your budget can stretch a tiny bit? It's fantastic - it has similar deep fruit flavours to the 18 but they're coupled with a spicier, more oaky profile, so I find it more multi-dimensional than the 18. |

I agree 100% with the above reply.
NB Maybe try getting hold of a Glenfiddich Snow Phoenix which is even better than the 15yo |

Both the Glenfiddich 15 Solera and Glenlivet 18 are great whiskies, i would not say 1 is way better than the other thay are simply different from each other as is the nature of a single malt whisky. Just a matter of personal taste, personally i would drink more of the Glenfiddich 15.
Both can often be found for a good price in the big supermarkets so why not get whatever is on offer and then look out for the other being on offer in the future.
Have you tried Highland Park, they have some pretty good stuff, the HP 12 is good and the HP 18 is excellent. |

As Archer says both the Glenfiddich 15 and Glenlivet 18 are both good whiskies which are often found available at a good price so why not try both at some point. But if you have to pick between the 2 then i personally would choose the Glenfiddich.
As far as something different have you tried Talisker yet or if you think you may like a sherry influenced whisky then there are some excellent whiskies to choose from, i would suggest the Macallan 10 sherryoak, Glendronach 15 Revival and the Glenfarclas 15. |

| If you are after something different Glenmorangie have some excellent wine cask finishes of which my choice would be the Glenmorangie Quinta Ruban port wood finish or indeed the Glenmorangie 10 year old is very good. |

Cheers for the replys everyone, I'm leaning more towards Glenfiddich, I will no doubt try them both though.
I'd like to try a Glenmorangie and maybe a Dalmore in the future, been reading reviews on thewhiskyechange and masterofmalt, as its coming into spring/summer I'm trying to edge away from peat monsters for something a little easier drinking.
Been tempted to purchase Aberlour 10 as its on offer quite cheap in the local shop.
So far, the whisky's I've tried are;
HP 12, this was my first whisky I ever bought, after the first glass I had a strong smokey taste in my mouth, which I enjoyed, I'd love to try the 18yr old.
Glenlivet 12, this goes down too easily as it is lovely stuff, I got this for £20 from the supermarket at xmas time in the offers. I find the bottle certainly looks 'posh'.
Coal ila 12, didn't really enjoy this, got a small 20cl one incase I didn't like it, not one I'd be buying again, I didn't find much taste in it.
Tallikser 10, again got a 20cl bottle, this stuff burnt like hell on every sip, very peppery and harsh, others may like it but I didn't.
Jura Superstition, again, not one I'd buy again, it had a strong brandy smell on the nose, to which I really can't stand brandy, yuk, I don't know what the correct term for that sort of smell is, however I associated it with brandy, namely Courvoisier on the nose.
Laphroaig 10, got a bottle for xmas as a present, loved the peaty smokey punch, lovely stuff. Would like to try an Ardbeg.
Laphroaig Quarter cask, didn't enjoy the first few glasses of this, then it grew on me but I prefered the 10yr old at the time, going back to the 10yr old now, I prefer the QC, far more taste...strange one there.
Glenfiddich 12, 15 and 18, all 5cl samples, loved the 15.
Drambuie, lovely stuff.
Glayva, nice but tastes like theres alot of sugar in it, don't know if it has any in though! it tastes similar to The Famous Grouse Liqueur I think, which I've got a full sealed bottle for sale if anyone wants it, 70cl.
The most I could probably offord right now is around £50. |

The Aberlour 10 is a great value sherried Speyside whisky which i would say is definitely worth a try and if you like it you could then consider spending a few pound more on something from the Macallan or Glenfarclas who both produce some excellent sherried malts.
There should be a load of whisky offers in the big supermarkets in the run up to Fathers Day, a good time to buy as the savings can somtimes be as much as £10 per bottle, so a good time to buy. |

For some reason I've never really got along with Aberlour 10, even though others here rate it really highly. I just found it a bit harsh and unbalanced, which is strange since people normally say it's really smooth! Either way, I would go along with the Macallan, Glenfarclas and Glendronach recommendations above - you can get the Macallan 10 for around £30, and the fantastic 15 year-olds by Glenfarclas and Glendronach at around £40. |

The Glenfiddich 15 and Glenlivet 18 are both great drams which you can often find at a decent price. I wouldnt choose one over the other, just depends on my mood which one i would have.
Another 2 worth a look are the Balvenie and Glengoyne, both offer some quality whiskies which most whisky drinkers enjoy. |

Both are great value whiskies but personally i would choose the Glenlivet 18 before the the Glenfiddich but then you dont have to choose if you go for both |
