Glenfiddich have unveiled not one but three new whiskies which will form their new travel retail exclusive Glenfiddich Cask Collection. The new collection consists of Glenfiddich Select Cask, Glenfiddich Reserve Cask and the peaty Glenfiddich Vintage Cask, with each expression in the new collection having been crafted to deliver its own distinct flavour profile
The three whiskies have been created using Glenfiddich's Solera Vat process which they pioneered back in 1998 to create the Glenfiddich 15 year old.

Glenfiddich Select Cask:
Matured in hand-selected aged Bourbon, European oak and red wine casks, then finished for at least 2 months in the Select Cask Solera Vat. 1 litre bottle, bottled at 40% ABV. RRP: £40.00

| I didnt think that Glenfiddich would be going down the no age statement route, I guess it is a sign of the huge increase in demand catching up with them and the supply of mature stock running low. Having said that William, your tasting notes on all 3 are tempting and dont even hint at them trying to pass off immature whisky. |

| Cheers William, that is the first i have heard of these, i shall certainly look out for them. Still a pity i will no longer be able to pick up 1 litre bottles of the Glenfiddich 15 & 18 at the airport. |

| I am sure these will be very drinkable, it is a pity to see Glenfiddich going no age statement but i think it must be a sign of things to come with all producers |

I have to say they were all very enjoyable whiskies and all different expressions of Glenfiddich from what is available in the domestic market, anyone who likes Glenfiddich will like these.
I actually tasted alll 3 last week and only just added a piece tothe site about them yesterday. The Glenfiddich Vintage Cask was excellent and great to see a decent smoky expression of Glenfiddich but will the smoke be enough to get people to part with £80 for a 70cl 40%no age bottle when you can pick up any of the 3 excellent Glenfiddich 19 year old Age of Discovery Collection at the airport for the same price.

Is it twice as good as the select? |
It is all to do with personal taste and what you are in the mood for, as I have said all 3 whiskies are excellent and will appeal to a mass audience which has got to be the case as Glenfiddich has a big audience.
The Vintage Cask appeared to me to be a more mature whisky than the Select but none of them appeared youthful in anyway. They have put together 3 quality expressions of Glenfiddich that I know that anyone who likes whisky will like.
Glenfiddich have turned out some superb vattings of varied age whiskies in the past such as the Snow Phoenix which was excellent and received deservedly high praise. These are 3 cracking whiskies, vattings of whisky which I am guessing are varied age, they have certainly been well put together and the pricing for the level of quality of the Select and Reserve Cask are no different than any other no age statement whisky which are coming to the marketplace now. £40 for a 1 litre bottle of the Glenfiddich Select Cask to me isn't out of place. £50 for the Glenfiddich Reserve Cask again to me isn't out of place for a 1 litre bottle of Spanish sherry cask matured whisky as sherry casks do cost whisky companies considerably more and it isn't out of place to pay more for sherry cask matured whisky. I wasn't putting down the Glenfiddich Vintage Cask in any way it is an excellent expression of Glenfiddich and quite unique due to its lovely smokiness I was only saying that it would be a hard sell at the airport next to the Glenfiddich 19 year old Age of Discovery Collection which sells for around £80.
The fact is demand continues to rise for malt whisky and as the demand has increased so have the prices, never more so than over the past few years. This huge increase in demand has come about since the late 1990's and I think it is starting to catch up with whisky companies and unless they do something about it now they will be running short of aging stock and then we really could see prices shoot up. Whisky companies didn't and couldn't have predicted this demand for 21, 18, 15 or even just 12 year old whisky back in the late 1990's. If the whisky companies had vast warehouses full of aging stock to meet all demand they wouldn't be risking sales by removing age statement whiskies from the shelves and replacing it with no age statement.
Having said all that I do also believe that there has been a wide scale premiumisation of malt whisky program in place over the past decade which has firmly established single malt and aged whisky as a luxury product which in turn has probably had more effect on malt whisky prices than any government taxes which the whisky industry don't shout too much about these days as they are responsible themselves for most of the price increases we have been seeing over the past few years.
Anyway, as I say 3 cracking new Glenfiddich travel retail exclusive whiskies to look out for on your travels.
Albo, as you liked the price of the Glenfiddich Vintage Cask you are going to love the price of the Girvan Patent Still 25 year old single grain whisky which I was drinking last night, review coming soon.

I am not happy with the whisky industry's move toward no age statements but it is a fact and it is happening whether the reason is profit or stock levels or i suspect a bit of both. I for one am not going to stop buying but i may not be able to buy the same aged whisky for everyday drinking today as i could 10 years ago.
Your reviews are appreciated William and without reviews i would be buying many whiskys blind and they are getting too expensive these days to do that so your reviews are invaluable, i will watch for these next month at the airport when i head down to London for a weekend.

William.....Ive the first age of discovery...Im going to buy the second two but........
.......The vintage one in that list, is it as good a drinking whisky as the age of discovery ones?
I havent tried them and the 1 I have and the two I'll get are just going in my collection, but I wouldnt mind tyring one this Christmas. At the prices I'll only get 1 to drink.....which would you recommend? |

All 3 of the Glenfiddich Age of Discovery bottlings are very good, my pick of the bunch would be the 2nd release, the Bourbon Cask Reserve. The Madeira Cask Finish is excellent and the Red Wine Cask Finish 3rd release is delicious also but as i say if i was to pick one from the bunch i would take the Bourbon Cask Reserve.
The new Glenfiddich Cask Collection is now part of Glenfiddichs travel retail core range alongside the Age of Discovery collection and i wouldnt hesitate to say the Vintage Cask is worth trying if you fancy a bit of smoke in your Glenfiddich but unfortunately i dont think you will be able to get hold of a bottle until the new year as the info i got from Glenfiddich was that the Glenfiddich Vintage Cask wont be available in global travel retail outlets until early 2014. The Select and Reserve Casks should be on shelves this month.

| Mrs M is flying over to Glasgow in a few weeks for a christmas shopping trip, i will ask her to look out for these, i fancy the sherried cask matured Reserve Cask |

I will give the Glenfiddich Bourbon Cask a vote also, in fact all 3 of the Age of Discovery bottlings are superb as William says. The Glenfiddich 21 year old is usually a good price at the airport, that is if they still stock it.
William the new Glenfiddich Cask Collection does sound good, i am sure i will get to try them at some point. |
