I received an email from Royal Mile Whiskies earlier this week saying that the Civil Aviation Authority is stopping the transport of high alcohol products in non-freight aeroplanes. It has got me quite concerned.
| Quote: | Dear Customer
Unfortunately the way we ship alcohol internationally will be changing from January.
The Civil Aviation Authority is stopping the transport of high alcohol products in non-freight aeroplanes, as they are now classing these liquids as "dangerous goods'. We are hopeful that we will be able to continue to ship to non-EU addresses using a freight service, but this is still uncertain. If we can it is likely that there will be higher postal charges, more documentation and taxes charged to the customer when receiving the goods. At the moment we don't have full details of these costs and it will take us some time before we know these charges and to set up new systems to allow us to resume shipping to your country.
Obviously, we have enjoyed and greatly appreciated your custom in the past and we hope to be able to serve you again in the near future.
We know this is as disappointing for you as it is for us and we will do what we can to find a legal and cost effective method of shipping as quickly as we can. We should also point out that it is not just Royal Mile Whiskies that will be affected by these new regulations and all companies shipping alcohol over 24% alcohol using non-freight shippers will also be subject to the same regulations.
If you want to stock up before these new regulations take effect, there should be time for one last order at current costs before our courier stops collecting from us on 7th January. |
I have looked on other sites such as The Whisky Exchange but cant find any mention of this. I place orders in the UK shops but have them delivered to my brother in Scotland and either him or one of the family bring them over to me, i normally get at least half a dozen visits a year between him, my sister in Scotland and my nieces and nephews. I receieve a few bottles each visit which they bring in there luggage and they usually pick me up something from the duty free.
Anyway, i am just worried my whisky source will be cut off if these new regulations will prevent travellers from putting alcohol/whisky in there luggage and perhaps restricting travellers to only being able to purchase from duty free outlets at the airport.
Has anyone else heard anything about this or have anymore info on how these new restrictions are going to work. I cant find anymore info online |

Mac, I got the same email from RMW. Strangely there doesnt appear to be any further info on there website and the other big online whisky shops dont mention it either. If it is true and there is no way around the new regulations it will certainly hit the big online whisky shops profits.
You make a good point about whether it wil affect what you can put in your case. I would often put a bottle in my case when going off on holiday as the duty free selection can be limited these days for instance when i flew out from Glasgow last summer they didnt have Lagavulin.
It doesnt really affect me greatly but i hope it works out well for you and other overseas members who may do online orders. |

Cheers Fergie, i have spent hours searching in google but cant find anything that tells me how this will work. At the moment i am not sure if RMW is scaremongering or not.
i can only hope for the best as as most of the Scotch maly whisky i drink over the age of 18 years is brought into the country by family and often it is limited editions which i cant buy here. |

| Strange there is no mention of this on The Whisky Exchange as i would have thought they do a lot of overseas business. I wonder if RMW are getting there facts correct. |

I have been browsing on google and here is what i have been able to find out about the new Civil Aviation Authority rules.
The new regulation bans shipments of alcoholic greater than 24% ABV in international mail, and this is in line with international treaties. So this would mean you cant ship by Royal Mail. As far as i can make out this does not affect courier companies such as FedEx, DHL who have there own freight planes. I believe Royal Mile Whiskies uses the Royal Mail as their carrier so this is why they have sent out the email.
Mac, there does not appear to be any changes in the current limits on whisky in checked baggage on airline flights from the UK. The current limit is 5 litres of alcohol lower than 70% ABV per person. I would suggest checking with your airline before flying. |

Major bummer! I understand that 'risk management' must have its place but it often just ends up creating needless red tape and making it difficult for people to just get on with their lives. Have there been incidents where high abv products have caused a problem? And isn't a plane just a pressurised steel tube full of people and kerosene screaming through the skies after all? Sounds risky enough already to me! _________________ "Whisky is liquid sunshine."

I can rest a little easier now.
Still annoying about the postage as i did get the odd bottle posted over which i couldnt wait to taste but at least things arent as gloomy as i thought. |

I guess here we have another nail in the coffin for us folks in Canada re whisky orders from abroad. There were already no whisky imports from Europe to Ontario directly and picking the order up in the US to bring back to Canada without length of stay rules, resulted in ridiculous 65% or more duties and now imports to USA appear to be kiboshed. A guy can't catch a break. _________________ "Always carry a large flagon of whisky in case of snakebite and furthermore always carry a small snake."

All is not lost. As per advice from others.
Exports - may be cheaper or more expensive depeniding on what you need but it is still possible!
LFW have just posted the following
New Overseas Terms and Conditions
Customers beyond Great Britain please note:
As a result of aviation regulations our previous shipping company (Royal Mail Group inc. ParcelForce, RMG) will no longer handle shipments of spirits. We now have new shipping partners who will handle our parcels as freight rather than mail.
This means our single bottle rate will go up significantly. Rates for four or six bottles to most destinations actually go down.
Also please note you will be liable for import charges and taxes, more so than with RMG.
If you wish us to ship to another country please check your new rates here and conditions by clicking on your country name on our Shipping Info page. |
