With St Patricks Day tomorrow 17th March and with Irish whiskey having something of a renaissance in recent times I thought I would ask what does Ireland offer to tempt you to put down your Scotch whisky and pick up an Irish whiskey
I have listed some suggestions here:
www.scotchmaltwhisky.co.uk/stpatricksdayirishwhiskey.htm
Personally in the the past year i have tasted a few outstanding Irish single pot still whiskies as they are now known and if i was to pick just one based on quality and price i would choose Powers Johns Lane
So what whiskey does Ireland offer that you enjoy _________________ There's no bad whisky. Just good whisky and better whisky. |

As far as Irish blends go, i think the Bushmills 1608 400th Anniversary bottling is excellent, i was a bit dubious about paying so much for it at first as it was a no age blend but i am very pleased i did and i have had a few bottles of it now. For an affordable everyday drinking blend then i go for Bushmills Black Bush.
As far as pot still whiskey goes the Redbreast 12 is excellent but i havent got around to trying any of the new additions to the Midleton range of single pot still whiskey. |

| I currently have 2 bottles of Irish whiskey on the go, Redbreast 12 and Bushmills 16, so i will probably have a dram of each. I have never been that impressed with the Bushmills 10 but the 16 is very good. The Redbreast pot still is a unique style and it cant really be compared to single malts, very easy to drink. |

I gave the Powers a go as it wasnt much more than the Redbreast and i was very pleased that i did, the wee touch of sherry cask influence makes it for me, it really is an outstanding whiskey.
The Whisky Exchange have a few good offers at the moment on Irish whiskey, Bushmills 1608 400th Anniversary is £39.95 which is £18 off |

Living in Northern Ireland i think i will be having a few this weekend and also enjoying my St Patricks Day holiday on Monday
I agree the new Powers Johns Lane is outstanding so is the Midleton Barry Crockett Legacy but that is way more expensive. I have had a few Knappogue Castle bottlings but not the 1995 bottling that you mention William, i see there is a Knappogue Castle 1998 now also but i havent had the pleasure of it yet either but any Knappogue Castle that i have tried has always been excellent.
I tasted the Jameson 2007 Rarest Vintage Reserve recently and it is excellent, unfortunately it wasnt my bottle i got to taste it thanks to a generous mate.
As far as Irish blends go i have a cupboard full but what i would reach for most often are Bushmills Black Bush, Jameson NAS +12 year old, Tullamore Dew.
I have had a few Midleton Very Rare bottlings over the years some have been quite poor and some have been outstanding, my advice to anyone looking to buy a bottle would be to seek out some reviews before buying as it aint a cheap dram but it can be very good indeed depending on which vintage you buy.
Happy St Pats Day |

| I received a Midleton Distillery "The Stillhouse" whiskey club members pack this morning, i had totally forgotten i had signed up for this when they launched there new single pot still whiskey website last year. They have me sent a lovely members journal which is a hard back tasting note book and also a Irish Single Pot Still Whiskey keyring. Very nice to receive it on St Patricks day. I think i will have some Redbreast 12 this evening |

| I'm having a Redbreast Single Pot Still 12 YO Cask Strength. I do have a Midleton Very Rare, but am saving that one for a special occasion. |
