Hi, I'm new on here so not quite sure how it all works but here goes.
A friend of mine would like to buy a cask for his new baby and have the distillery store it till his son is 21. How does he go about doing that and which distilleries would do it?
Thanks |

Yes, I've heard of that scenario. Here's one such place:

Try contacting independent distilleries, ie those that are not owned by a multinational company, eg Bladnoch, Bruichladdich, Benromach, Springbank, Glengoyne(see Ralfy's YouTube review number 91) |

Hi Bourach and welcome to the SMW forum.
Very few barrels of whisky are sold to the general public but there are a few distilleries which sell a limited amount of barrels to the public. As DavidUK says there are a few distilleries where you can buy a barrel of whisky such as Bladnoch, Bruichladdich, Benromach, Springbank, Glengoyne and another couple which come to mind are Arran and Glenglassaugh. All these distilleries have websites and should have detailed info on the sites about buying a barrel.
One thing to be aware of is the additional costs on top of the purchase price of the barrel, as it isnt just the cost of purchasing the cask of whisky. There is also the storage costs, duty and taxes when you take the barrel out to be bottled and the bottling costs and perhaps transportation costs if you are not collecting it yourself.
If all the costs dont put you off you will need to decide about which distillery to buy from. The distillery will then be able to advise you what there whisky will be like once matured but you yourself can have a influence on what the final whisky will be like as you can usually choose what type of cask to mature the whisky in for example if you like sherried whisky you would choose to mature it in a sherry cask and you decide how long to mature it for.
Cheers
