Hello all, a couple of times now after I've finished my whisky, I leave the glass there on the table without washing it, I come back to it the next day and when I nose the glass, it has a distinct smell, best I can describe is a natural, earthy and toffee/caramel aroma.
Anyone know what this could be? |

| After a late dram i have been known to leave my glass until the morning, my wife dislikes it and refers to the smell from the glass in the morning as stale whisky which i would say is a good description. |

It's interesting you say that. I generally pour from the bottle into a shot glass and then into a glencairn glass. Occasionally a slight amount (neat) stays in the shot glass for a few hours and the Highland malts usually result in a toffee/butterscotch /chocolate smell in the shot glass. It once happened with Bowmore 12 and the residual smell after a few hours was butterscotch/toffee none of which was unpleasant. However if a bit is left over which had been mixed with spring water , the smell after some hours is less pleasant and like Bookie says: "stale" or sometimes like a "matchbox".. _________________ "Always carry a large flagon of whisky in case of snakebite and furthermore always carry a small snake."

Anyone know what this could be? | I am guilty of leaving my empty glass until the next morning and i would say your description "natural, earthy and toffee/caramel aroma." is very accurate. I assume it is the dried consentrated aromas of the whisky that still coated the glass when you finished drinking. |

One morning my wife told me that she had thought something in the house was burning until she narrowed it down to my peaty snifter from the previous evening. _________________ "Whisky is liquid sunshine."

Yeah I find its whiskys that are peaty or smokey that leave this certain aroma, out of all the whiskys I've tried, HP12 leaves the nicest aroma in the glass the next day. |

| I often find this too, I've never found any of the smell particularly offencive though Ardbegs do tend to linger in the air. |

I dont find the smell from the glass next morning offensive at all but my wife does and long may it remain that way, 2 of us with a taste for expensive malt whisky
It is amazing how powerful the aroma is given that it is no more than a slight trace that is left in the glass. |
