|
|
| Hi, I'm a new member to the forum, but have recently rediscovered the joys of whisky. I'm no expert, but I now have a modest collection of some 12 and 15 year olds. Let's say that I were to spend £100 (ish) on a 70cl bottle - what would you recommend? I like Speyside malts, and have a sweet tooth (I especially like Glenlivet 18). |

Welcome to the forum! Perhaps you could try:
Glenfarclas 25
Macallan 18
If you wanted something alternative to Speyside:
Old Pulteney 21 (c. £85)
Highland Park 21 (c. £90)
Just suggestions... _________________ "Whisky is liquid sunshine."

I think you would like Glenmorangie Signet, it is an outstanding whisky and just slightly over your £100 budget.
Glenfiddich 21 is also very good. |

Three of the best distilleries at the moment are Balblair,Glendronach, and Tomatin, so have a look for something from them in that price range or less.
If you opt for Old Pulteney, go for the 17yo rather than the 21yo. It's cheaper, and, in most opinions, is better too. |

I agree with DavidUK about the Old Pulteney I have tried three Old Pulteney, the 12, 17 and 21 at the Glasgow Festival last year after each other and bought the 17 at Duty Free on the way home. |

| Just an update on what I bought based on your recommendations. In the end I went for the Glenfarclas 25. I also bought a bottle of Glenlivet 21. I'll do some tasting and let you know what I thought (actually, I daren't open them!). Cheers! |

Paul, you made some very good choices. Good luck!

| Get them open Paul, both excellent whiskies, personally only had 1 bottle of each and my bottles are long gone but they are amongst my top whiskies i have tasted. And Scotch whisky was made to be drunk. |

I would also add that if you find another spare 100 quid some of the following are worth a look at
Arran - up and coming with some great buys of 15yr old
Balblair - some really good value whiskies and underrated at the moment
Kilchoman Sherry Cask bottlings
G+M bottlings of Speymalt and Mortlach
and as an outside bet - Shackeltons replica, I've tried some and it's fab. |

Well, Christmas is coming...
I've never tried any of those, but based on your recommendations, I try to get my hands on at least one of them for Christmas. I see some of the Kilchoman offerings are 5 years old - very interesting !
Actually, tonight I've just opened bottle of Aberlour A'bunadh. Bought it today at a discount price (£27) from a local supermarket. It's the first cask-strength bottle in my collection (which is growing steadily). It's amazing. I've not added water (yet), but the richness of the sherry and the 59% power has got me hooked !
I did open both the Glenlivet 21 and the Glenfarclas in the end. I couldn't wait to try them any longer. I was litterally blown away by the taste of each. The Glenlivet 21 is simply the best I've ever tasted. I visited their distillery in August whilst on holiday in Scotland, but didn't try the 21, just the 18. I'm not going neck this straight down, but only bring it out for special occasions.
I have a little blog going about my tasting experiences - if anyone is interested... (not written about my experinces with the Glenlivet of Glenfarclas yet) http://whiskyathome.blogspot.co.uk/
Anyway, thanks for your help and comments guys ! |
