|
|
Bunnahabhain has announced that it will release a one-off rare single malt that has lain undiscovered for four decades at the distillery on the northern shore of Islay.
Hidden for 40 years, the whisky quietly matured until Master Distiller, Ian MacMillan, discovered the casks listed in the distillery ledgers.
The rare Bunnahabhain 40 year old is unchill-filtered, bottled at 41.7% ABV. Bunnahabhain distillery will release only 750 bottles, which will be individually numbered and hand signed and it will have a retail recommended price of £1,999.

William, this one sounds like a winner. One often wonders what great finds are lurking in whisky storage warehouses unbeknownst to anyone. _________________ "Always carry a large flagon of whisky in case of snakebite and furthermore always carry a small snake."

| I wonder how many casks they found in the warehouse to get a total of 750 bottles after 40 years, i would guess they found a few. |

Does sound very nice, and an excellent find for them I'm sure.
Thankfully it was found when still at 41.7% abv, would have been awful if it had dipped below the 40% mark |

Way out of my price range but when you have a look at the 40 year old malts over at The Whisky Exchange this is coming in at the top end and it isnt as limited a release as some of the others at the top end of the price scale for available 40 year olds. They may struggle to shift 750 bottles at £1999 or perhaps there really is that many buyers willing to pay that amount. |

Seems odd that they just happen to be 40yrs old, just so they can be branded as a premium and sold as such.
Still I'm sure they will taste nice, though I wont be spending £2k on a bottle. My divorce would cost me a lot more anyway |

I have added a tasting note from Bunnahabhain for the 40 year old. I also asked them to confirm how many casks there was to make up the 750 bottles of the Bunnahabhain 40, the person i spoke to is going to ask Ian, i will let you know when i get an answer.
Ian MacMillan joined Burn Stewart Distillers in 1991 and is Head of Distilleries and Master Blender for three Burn Stewart distilleries which are Bunnahabhain, Tobermory/Ledaig and Deanston.
Burn Stewart Distilleries bought the Bunnahabhain distillery in 2003 and I think Ian MacMillan has transformed the distillery as well as the Tobermory/Ledaig and Deanston distilleries. It was Ian's vision to bottle all Burn Stewart single malt whisky at a higher ABV and un-chillfiltered, and IMO they are all vastly improved whiskies and we have Ian to thank for that. I wish more distilleries would follow what Ian has done.
There is always going to be a bit of pr company marketing hype with a release such as the Bunnahabhain 40 but i think that Ian would have discovered these casks in the ledgers some time after Burn Stewart took control of Bunnahabhain in 2003 and he probably closely monitored them until this time when he decided to bottle them. And of course from a business point of view it is a good time of year to release such a whisky with christmas approaching.
As far as price goes, i think every whisky i cant afford is over priced _________________ There's no bad whisky. Just good whisky and better whisky. |
