A few demolished distilleries that I rarely hear about are Banff and St. Magdalene. Has anyone ever tried a bottle from either of these? _________________ "Always carry a large flagon of whisky in case of snakebite and furthermore always carry a small snake."

| I had an Douglas Laing Old Malt Cask St. Magdalene 1982 bottling a couple of years ago, it was a 28 year old. I intended to keep it in the collection but couldnt resist and opened it and it was superb. I think bottles are now starting to increase in price so if you are interested i wouldnt leave it too long before buying a bottle. |

Douglas Laing have had a few excellent Old Malt Cask bottlings of St Magdalene, all 1982 vintage and the last one was released the end of 2011. You would be lucky to find any in a whisky shop now as the DLs OMC St Magdalene bottlings were all very highly rated. I only tasted the 1982/November 2010 bottling and it was an an excellent Lowland malt.
I noticed that there is a Ian Macleod Chieftain's range bottling of St Magdalene 1982 26 Year Old Cask #2219 over at TWE but i havent heard anything about it but it is priced at £155 which isnt a bad price considering its bottled at cask strength. There are also a few Gordon & Macphail Connoisseurs Choice bottlings.
I wouldnt think many have tasted Banff single malt whisky. There has been some bottlings from the 1970s released in recent times from Douglas Laing and Duncan Taylor but your cheapest option would be to look for a Gordon & Macphail Connoisseurs Choice bottling. _________________ There's no bad whisky. William, thanks for the bottling information and offerings associated with these two silent distilleries, _________________ "Always carry a large flagon of whisky in case of snakebite and furthermore always carry a small snake."

Hi Quaich1, a friend let me try the Silent Stills 1966 34yo Banff. This was a couple of years ago and I remember enjoying it but thinking that it had had too much time in the wood, though the bottle may have been open for years.

I just noticed that one of my favorite single malt haunts, Feather's Pub has St. Magdalene 19 Year Old, Cask Strength available by the dram but no other info on the bottle is provided on the list. Next time I'm in Toronto, I may well try it.

| Banff is one whisky which i havent tried. I have had (about 10 years ago) a Gordon & Macphail bottling of St Magdalene which was a very pleasant lowland whisky. |

| A look on whiskybase.com suggests that stoc ks have virtually run dry from these two distilleries. |

They're not the only ones either. From memory there are very few bottles released nowadays from the distilleries which closed around 1983. Even Port Ellen's have slowed up consderably. |
