Well, it was another great night (Tuesday) at the International Order of the Companions of the Quaich, Niagara-on-the-Lake Chapter, the single malt scotch club I belong to here in Ontario.
The offerings were:
Ardmore Highland Single Malt-Peated, 46%abv
Macallan 14 Year Old Cooper's Choice, only 350 bottles available worldwide, 46%abv.
Springbank 12 Year Old Cask Strength, 55.3%abv.
The dinner was equally inviting:
STARTER
Cream of Wild Mushroom Soup with Goat Cheese & Black Truffle Oil
Or
Wedge Salad With Yogurt & Blue Cheese Dressing, Double Smoke Bacon & Preserved Cherry
MAIN
Braised Beef Short Ribs with Roasted Potatoes, Kale & Sweet Potato
Or
PAN Seared Atlantic salmon with Lemon Dill Risotto & Green Beans
DESSERT
Traditional Carrot Cake with Candied Walnuts & Cream Cheese Frosting
It was once again a great evening with piper, kilts galore, comraderie and great scotch.
My taste notes available in the appropriate Forum section. _________________ "Always carry a large flagon of whisky in case of snakebite and furthermore always carry a small snake."

Sounds like it was a good night, good food and a few nice whiskies, i was just reading through your tasting notes. Did they serve the whisky with the meal or after? _________________ There's no bad whisky. Just good whisky and better whisky. |

William, the general format at the Companion of the Quaich tasting and dinner spreads the 3 drams over about three hours of the event. The first dram is served just before the first course and the other two are served during the meal. There is also white French bread for palate cleansing throughout. The food lends itself to complementing the drams. The spacing of the drams over the whole evening, ending in a round of coffee in the last half hour with dessert all facilitates neutralizing the effects of the alcohol, particularly since some have to drive after the event. I've been to so many tastings with the club and I have never felt that the meal the way it is served adversely affected the experience. I feel it complements it.
I was sitting with the President of the 22 chapters across Canada (from Ontario to British Columbia) last night and his wife at my table and I was so very impressed with his single malt knowledge and anecdotes. The evening also includes the haggis ceremony, reciting of the poem by a true Scotsman,
humorous anecdotes and lots of great conversation. _________________ "Always carry a large flagon of whisky in case of snakebite and furthermore always carry a small snake."
