In the late 1970's my parents owned a liquor store. One of the things they kept when they sold it was a bottle of Chivas Royal Salute (21 yo) that has an upside down label. 30 years later they still have the bottle, unopened. Does anyone know where I might find out how much it is worth? I know Chivas is not a top brand, and this is blended, not single malt, but does the age and upside down label add any significant value? My father wants to open it to toast my graduation from college, but I would like to find out if he is making a mistake. Any advice would be appreciated.

The stamp on the bottle has two numbers on it. Here they are if it helps in any way:

I am guessing but perhaps the reason the bottle has an upside down label is that it was produced to go on a gantry in a bar and sit upside down with an optic attached. But that would be unusual for a deluxe blend as you do not usually find them with an optic attached they are usually hand poured in a bar. I couldnt really say whether the the upside down label or whether it was bottled in the 1970s adds any value or not but my guess would be not much. Having said that it is a deluxe blend that would cost you £89 today see here:

The number you mention is most likely from the bottling plant and is used for for quaity control reasons and will probably only mean something to the Chivas bottling plant.

If you do decide to open it you will not be disappointed as it is a nice whisky which i would highly recommend. If you are still looking to sell it you could try contacting The Whisky Exchange as they buy rare and collectable whisky.
