Here are my taste note for my dram of Oban 14 today based on the state of my buds:

Neat-

Nose: Hint of candy floss, musk melon and papaya, smokehouse notes, summer meadow adorned with wild flowers, lichee in syrup, scones with lemon marmelade and over-ripe cantaloupe pieces on gingerbread crackers.

Palate: Warming, creamy, layers of chocolate, varieties of mint and spice with just a hint of pepper. Flavors change from the proverbial caterpillar to butterfly as in time lapse photography leaving one without a true focus and a bit confused.

Finish: Lingering, leather n' spice, cloves n' mint, expresso sweet crema, a wave of peat and smoke with sprinkles of sea salt.

I would have expected a little more out of this dram today. I would agree with Jim Murray that it is absolutely all over the place. Will have to try it again soon....

I have a hard time with Oban 14, it's kind of like it's trying to do too much, if that makes any sense. It's a surprisingly difficult dram given its status as one of the 'Classic Malts' by Diageo - I find it hard to pinpoint one particular fault with it, but it's not one I enjoy very much. Oddly enough, the Benromach 10, which I just tried for the first time today, has a pretty similar profile in my opinion, but does it better than Oban so to speak. They're unlikely bedfellows perhaps, but then again the Benromach reminds me more of a coastal Highland in style than a middle of the road Speyside.

Sorry for the rambling and slightly irrelevant post!

Alex, I think your comments are quite relevant and are congruent with mine. We definitely have the same view on this one.
Very Happy

Indeed, I just felt like I could've expressed myself more succinctly! No doubt I could have had it not been for the whisky in my system! Do you know the Benromach 10, by the way? (Highly recommended if not - not just by me, all reviews I've read have been very complimentary. Serge Valentin scores it at 87, which is a rarity for him for a young entry-level distillery bottling)

I've never had the Benromach 10. Actually, the only Benromach available here at the LCBO is the 30 Year old and its $500.00 or 311 pounds equivalent. I'll give that one a pass. However, I'll keep my eye out for the 10 should it become restocked here at some point.
