On Saturday 20 January 2013 New Zealand time, the New Zealand Prime Minister John Key returned 3 bottles Mackinlay's whisky to the Antarctic Heritage Trust in Antarctica. The 3 bottles are from whisky crates excavated from under explorer Sir Ernest Shackleton's only Antarctic expedition base by Trust conservators in 2010. They had lay there undisturbed for over 100 years.

Repatriating the whisky back to Antarctica fulfils the permit conditions issued by the New Zealand Minister of Foreign Affairs to remove, analyse and return the whisky. But before they were returned, Whyte & Mackay's Master Blender, Richard Paterson, used his unique nosing and tasting skills to create an exact replica of the whisky which proved so popular he has since made a 2nd replica both of which raised £100,000s for the Antarctic Heritage Trust.

William just spotted your post on the Mackinlay's Shackleton, i really need to pay more attention when i visit the forum.

I agree great stuff, i know there is a lot if marketing behind the Shackletons malt but i love the story behind it and i have had 3 bottles of what they are now calling the Shackleton Discovery and i can say it is very good. I need to get hold of the a bottle of the second edition of the Shackleton's Mackinlay's Journey to see how it compares. My nephew will be over in the spring so i may order one for him to bring over.
