I just got a phone call from a buddy of mine who came into possession yesterday of a bottle of Glenfiddich Special Reserve with no age statement that he is giving me as a gift tomorrow. The fellow he obtained it from said he got it 19 years ago. Any comments or info on this one would be much appreciated.

I think that was the regular bottling until 10-15 years ago when they added the age statement.

Murray, as drPete says Glenfiddich was bottled with no age statement up until the mid to late 1990's and it is thought that the whisky in the Glenfiddich 1990's NAS bottles was around 8 years old.

IMO it is a whisky where age does matter i would say the current 12 year old is superior to the old NAS bottling. I would say a Glenfiddich NAS bottling from the 1990's wouldnt be worth a great deal but it would certainly interesting to compare it with todays 12 year old.

Of course if the bottle had been from the 1960's then it would be worth quite a bit more.

I'll check the bottle when I get it tomorrow. Who knows. It could be older than expected, 1960's? I hope so.

I picked up the bottle from a friend to day of Glenfiddich Special Reserve Single malt Scotch 375ml or 37.5 cl 40%abv. There is no age statement. I have 2 photos, one of the carton and the other of carton and bottle. It was in the possession of a man who owned it for around 20 years and he's not sure how long the previous owner had it. The round carton has both English and French Translation. It was bought in Canada.

I would appreciate confirmation of year of bottling, any possibility of 1960's? or anything else you might have to add about this particular bottle and carton.

It looks very much like a 1990s bottling to me, the reason i say this is the label says Single Malt and i believe the label said Pure Malt in the 1970's and 1980's, not sure when they dropped the Pure Malt term exactly.

I agree i would say it was from the 1990s. I believe Glenfiddich used the term Unblended Whisky at one point. Not sure when they dropped the Pure Malt but i would guess at the end of the 1980s to early 1990s.

Thanks for the input. I just poured a dram and posted my taste notes.

Just read you tasting note, sounds very much like the Glenfiddich we know but how would you say it compares with the current 12 year old bottling, was there a noticeable age difference?
