Here is an interesting new release from the Springbank distillery which I think could be worth watching for; the Longrow 11 Year Old Rundlets & Kilderkins.

Rundlets and Kilderkins is a strange name for a whisky which many of you may not be familiar with, it is the name of the small 60 litre and 80 litre casks that were commonly used in the 17th and 18th century.

This release follows on from the earlier release of Springbank Rundlets & Kilderkins which was an experiment by Springbank that turned out very well and the whisky was very popular and highly rated by whisky drinkers including myself.

Longrow 11 Year Old Rundlets & Kilderkins was distilled November 2001 and bottled January 2013 at 57.1% abv and is a limited edition of 9000 bottles. Priced around £59

William, the LCBO now has Springbank 12 Year Old Cask Strength at $102.95 Canadian at 54.6% abv. I also had the cask strength at a tasting in Nov. 2012 at 55.3% abv.

Murray, i have tried a few batches of the Springbank 12 CS and all i tried have been been good, all a blend of Springbank matured in first-fill and refill sherry casks making it a lovely rich expression of Springbank. The new 2013 batch 5 is 53.1% abv.

These sound interesting, I have enjoyed many of the Longrow (and Springbank) releases though I do still lament the loss of the Longrow CV. It's also a malt that you can buy with the confidence that you're supporting jobs in Campbeltown and that much of the money goes back to the local economy.

I bought a bottle of the Springbank Rundlets & Kilderkins after trying it at a tasting last year, cant wait to try the Longrow Rundlets & Kilderkins .

bifter i didnt realise they had ended the Longrow CV, i still have an unopened bottle in the cupboard. Springbank could do with updating there web site as it states on the Longrow brand page:
Quote:
The whisky is named after the old Longrow distillery which stood adjacent to Springbank and Longrow CV is the latest addition to the range, complementing the existing 10 and 14 year old bottlings.

No mention of the CV being discontinued

The Springbank website is a wonderful hotch-potch of lack of updates, unreliable information and broken log-ins.........

Here in Canada, we have the:
LONGROW CV HEAVILY PEATED CAMPBELTOWN SINGLE MALT
for $82.95

As is the Cadenhead's Web site. They really need someone to take their Web presence in hand.

That's a healthy premium as it was around £33 in the UK. I'd give it a miss at that price!

The Longrow CV picked up the top prize in its category at the World Whisky Awards 2010 and Best Peated Malt Award (Daily Drams) at Malt Maniacs Awards 2010. I reviewed it in the tasting notes forum a while back, I thought it was a worthy competitor to Caol Ila 12. As you'll see if you try to source it, it is now pretty much unavailable.
