I would be interested in Forum members view of this Caol Ila expression. _________________ "Always carry a large flagon of whisky in case of snakebite and furthermore always carry a small snake."

Forgive me, I have not, but just to say, I have never had a great CI. A few resoable ones, and many average ones, and too many poor ones, but never a great one. _________________ Talisker 18 - the rest are just details |

Sorry i havent had the G & M Caol ila 1998 either. I thought the unpeated Caol Ilas were pretty good. I have had the Caol Ila 1998 Distillers Edition which was a Moscatel Sherry Finish and delicious.
I have had some no more than average Caol ila's from indie bottlers. |

I have an unopened bottle of the Moscatel finish, the same one you rate highly. I look forward even more to it now. _________________ "Always carry a large flagon of whisky in case of snakebite and furthermore always carry a small snake."

I haven't tried this either.
I've had some really good expressions from the indi bottlers though, in fact the last 2 bottles I picked up from the SMWS were Caol Ila's one sherry finish and one bourbon. Both splendid.
In fairness though, I have tasted some average stuff from CI also, some of the SMWS bottleings I've tried have just been very middle of the road and I wouldn't pay for a bottle.
Guess it's one of those ditilleries you really need to try before you spend your hard earned. |

I agree. The last two CIs have been amazingly good and far superior to most of the Ardbeg and Laphroaig offerings. The DB character of CI is quite reserved but the recent SMWS offerings have had much more character with some really strong smoke.
Of course this still doesn't answer the OP's question, sorry I haven't tried it! _________________ "Whisky is liquid sunshine."
