Next Thursday, a friend with one of the rarest single malt scotch collections i know of in this part of Canada is coming over to my place for a tasting just with me, 4 drams. He's bringing some really good stuff but wants to surprise me. I'll be checking my inventory to see what to offer him. He has won some prestigious single malt tasting competitions against international competition in Scotland. He did say the stuff he was bringing was Islay. I sure hope it's some rare Port Ellen.

Now that's the kind of friend to have.

I didn't realise there was single malt whisky tasting competitions, i assume these competitions are in Canada as i have never heard of any here. What do the competitions involve, is it blind tastings and identifying the whisky?

Hi Fergie. I would like to know in advance what drams I'm having but I think he would like the ones I serve him from my collection, blind. He apparently has some individual bottles in the 7,000-10,000 dollar range. W'ell see if any of those make it here. I'll think of you when we're dramming.

Hi Keith,

Actually, he was invited to attend a tasting competition on Islay quite a few years ago and won some special bottles in blind tasting and identification I believe with a pile of contestants. He's been in other such events in Europe. He mentioned he was able to identify some real tricky ones. He can give elaborate taste notes from memory on 100's of single malts. It's scary. He's like a walking encyclopedia of single malt scotch as well as cognac and saki. The last tasting I had with him was at his house about a year ago and we had some unique drams but not what like I'm expecting this time round (hopefully the big guns of the whisky world).

I wouldnt mind trying out my knowledge in a blind tasting to identify whisky, i am confident i would be able to identify a quite a few after my many years in training.

I am jealous Quaich1, sounds like you may get to taste something rare, enjoy Exclamation

I hope he brings some good ones. When i think of something unique and special from Islay, Port Ellen comes to mind first, then i would think older rare Lagavulin or Ardbeg. Whatever your friend brings enjoy and let us know what he brought.

Cheers
Keith

Will do. He's coming over next Thursday. I saw him at a gathering earlier and when we discussed his impending visit, he smiled...that bodes well for the good stuff.

Thursday's the day of the tasting so I picked up Fiji water (for adding a couple of drops) when needed and Nairn's Scottish Oak Crackers as a palate cleanser between drams. Got to have all my ducks in a row....

One day away from the special tasting. I'm really looking forward to it. I hope he brings some top rate stuff which I expect he will. i got the glasses (Glencairn and Neat glasses) ready and palate cleansers, oak crackers and sorbet and forms to fill out for taste notes.

Murray have you decided what you are going to offer your friend to drink?

Hi William. He's never tried Glenfiddich Cask of Dreams, Canadian Edition nor Tomintoul 21 Years so those two will be offered. I will also let him peruse my hoard of bottles and see what else catches his eye. I'm still not sure which ones he's bringing. I'll report back afterwards.
