|
|
Afternoon all,
Dropped into Macallan today as was passing and they had a 'limited edition 6 pillars x-ray box whisky'. I've had a look around on the Internet and can't find much information.
An American edition didn't meet reserve on SWA for £700 but apparently there is a difference between the UK and USA version. How limited is this 'limited' edition?
They had a complete 6 bottle collection for £270, but it appears to just be a standard 12 with a fancy box. Any thoughts or information please!! |

I don't know how limited it is, I saw it in the states last year, bog-standard 12 yr old in posh boxes. Interesting that there is a UK version, not seen that before.
Edited - just done some more digging, the UK ?europe set (700ml) seem to be fine oak, not sherry _________________ Talisker 18 - the rest are just details |

AFAIK it was normal 12 year old in limited edition packaging which featured x-ray images of the Macallan 6 pillars by British photographer Nick Veasey who used an X-ray machine rather than a traditional camera to take the images. The Macallan's six pillars are: spiritual home, curiously small stills, finest cut, exceptional oak casks, natural colour and peerless spirit.
I believe they were only available in the US for a limited period, launched for the christmas period 2011 in the US.
I am not aware of a UK edition, did you notice if the bottles in the Macallan shop were 70cl or 75cl. |

I forgot to check the size of the bottle, but the ABV was 40% and from what little I could find on the web suggests the US version was 43% ABV.
The boxes look cool but I'm not sure of the value of a special box!! Does anyone think these will be collectible because of a box?
The sceptic in me thinks this is a good way of getting rid of remaining 12 year old stock at an inflated price by bringing back some successful marketing from 2 years ago in the US. But I haven't heard a Europe/UK product launch of any kind? |

No launch I ever saw but a few shops around Europe are stocking a 700ml fine oak version. _________________ Talisker 18 - the rest are just details |

The Macallan Xray 12 year old is available in Germany, the box contains 12 year old Fine Oak bottled at 40%. It is in a Macallan Xray box but no special label on the bottle, priced around 55 Eur. The German whisky shop whisky.de says that it is a limited edition 2012 collectors series.
With the young age statement fine oak bottlings replaced by the new Macallan colours range perhaps this limited edition 12 year old fine oak was launched in europe using the Macallan Xray packaging and marketing to offload the fine oak stock.
Macallan is always collectable some bottles will make you £30 or £40 in a few years some will make you £100s. This one would have to sell out first before making you any profit and even then it is no more than special packaging so it wont make a great deal IMO having said that the bottle does contain 12 year old fine oak which is discontinued AFAIK.
Did you notice if it was Macallan 12 Fine Oak or Sherryoak in the bottle at the distillery as i believe the US version was sherryoak and it looks like there is also a 12 year old Fine Oak version this side of the water.
I wonder if we will see The Macallan Xrray 12 year old Fine Oak rolled out in the UK? |

I believe it was the Fine Oak 12 year old version, thus from what people have added to this thread would indicate a 'new' European version.
It's available from the visitors centre at the moment. Think I'll give this one a miss but with anything Macallan and Limited it will probably increase in value!
Thank you very much for ever ones help!! |
